When will PSA grade it Pr-Fr 1 and when will they grade it "Authentic"

I just acquired this T 206 Cobb in a huge collection. I have no doubt that it is real. I have looked at it with a loupe and the card comes from a reliable sourse. I just feel that it will sell better in a PSA holder. My question is - what will this grade? A Pr-Fr 1 or "Authentic"? Where do you draw the line? When do they refuse to holder if a piece is missing? I mean, I am sure they wouldn't holder half a card (even if it was a 52 Mantle or a T206 Wagner? Here is a scan of front and back.

I think I have seen worse cards in a PSA 1 holder.

If you know: Are the white paper-loss spots quite recent?

Actually, yes. There was some clear plastic stuck to it. I pulled it off, and presto - white paper loss! Me personally, would still rather have it that way than with plastic stuck to it.

I was concerned that the white-paper was out of place.
Now, I know that it is not.

If you have the problem again, you should consider at
least trying to soak-off whatever is stuck to the cards,
before using force. After a day or less in a bowl of water,
most unwanted stuff will float off w/o ripping the surface.

Just put the wet card in a paper-towel or a flat t-shirt rag,
    and put it between a BIG phone-book for a couple days;
    usually works out well.

If you already know all that stuff, pardon the redundancy.

No, I didn't know that. Crud!

Will the white paper loss hurt the card as far as getting it authenticated, or will they know regardless. I looked through a loupe, and the black border is solid (not speckled print dots like a counterfeit would be).

  • I don't think I've ever seen a PSA 1 with this much damage. I'd be surprised if you got a grade better than authentic...

That would be ok. I just want to be sure that they will do "authentic" on that card. I would say that they would since it is such a popular card.

  • Given the draw of this card, I'd bet PSA would slab it as authentic. I've seen other cards with a bit more missing still grade authentic, including a T206 Cobb Portrait.

Since that Cobb is just trash, these is no need for me to have it. I'll just give it to you. Send me your address if you want it.

I recently sent in a 1952 Topps Willie Mays that had quite a few creases but with no paper loss and it was nicely centered. It came back not gradeable due to the fact that someone had put a mark on it over a creased area. I contacted PSA and asked if they would grade it as authentic so it would be slabbed. Their response was no, that "the "Authentic" grade is used most commonly for hand-cut cards. On
other very rare occasions for very rare or very high valued cards, we will do an "Authentic" grade." I replied that I thought my card would be a candidate, after all it is one of the "Top 200 Cards" according to Joe's book. Haven't heard back yet. I would think your Cobb would be considered "rare" or "high valued", so I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up in an "Authentic" holder.

they're just jealous, no worries. I think it will at least be PSA authentic, which will bring some serious $$$.

keep it. from a historical value it has worth. i have a t206 cobb graded authentic. do i wish it were a 3 or 4 at least of course. with so much counterfeiting having a set of t206's all graded authentic wouldn't be the worst thing to have.
  • Shane, that card would look great in a PSA Authentic SLAB! go for it! it may even make a PSA 1......

this card has holes in the middle, but its from THE Toughest SET in the World, the 1914 Cracker Jack Set....

    Thanks for the scan.

Should I attach a note to the Card Saver telling the grader why the paper loss in the middle is so fresh? Will the fresh paper loss raise a red flag? Or, would you just send it without a note?

    Looky here!

    1954 Bowman Mantle

If they would slab that as authentic, surely they would do a T206 Cobb. Wouldn't you think?

This is a beautiful set but not close to bing "the toughest" . Basically if there is a complete set, its not the toughest.
