Best sportscard trade/purchase ever made

Hi, my name is Tom and I am a new member just trying to get my feet wet on this board. I've been collecting since kindergarten (1970) and have predominantly baseball cards. Just thinking about the best trade/purchase I ever made. Back in 1999, I purchased 3 raw Jordan rookies (2 '86 Fleer and 1 '84 Star) for $1600. I received an 8 and a 5 on the Fleer from PSA and a 7 from CSA on the Star. Sold the 5 and the 7 for $1700 and kept the PSA 8. Anyone else have that 1 killer deal in their memory?

I traded a few older non sport cards (about 45 bucks) that were accumulating dusk in my room for a 55 topps Ted Kluzewski, which graded a PSA 8. It is now worth a few hundred and in my PSA set. One man's trash is another's treasure!

Hi Tom , Welcome aboard. Most of good trades are the ones I didn't make. at times I was ready to trade this or that, only to wait. At times it turned out to be the best move. I'm great at sizing up personalities, not so good with trades or deals. This is a great place to learn and meet some very funny, witty & knowlegable people. Sonny (calaban7)

    Hi Tom

Welcome. It looks like a slow nite!

I have many. But, I will stick with a trade...

In 1992/3 - I shared my table at a small show with a guy who gave me his 75T Ryan mini.

Last year I got around to having it graded:

  • In '98 I went to visit the local card dealer and he had just got some boxes of SP Authentic Football. Since it was a fresh box, I decided to open a pack to see how the cards looked and hit a Peyton Manning RC. I sent it to PSA and it came back a 9. Those were great times. Technically a great purchase!

Hi Tom and welcome. Mine would have to be a good and bad one. Basically to make a long story short, I purchased a 1940 Playball #1 Joe DiMaggio and a 1954 Hank Aaron rookie for $150.00 along with a couple of 1940's non sport cards (Dick Tracy I think). I sold the DiMaggio raw for $1,100 and the sold the Aaron graded a PSA 5 for about $450.00. Nice net gain and I still have those few non sport cards.
Unfortunately, I don't have the DiMaggio because it was very close to getting an 8 if graded.

  • At my first card show in the early 80s I bought a 59 Mickey Mantle AS for like $15- still have it and it graded out a PSA 6 last year.

I think one of my best purchases was for (200) 1985 Topps Eric Davis RCs that I got for about .19 cents each
at the beginning of the 85 season. I ended up getting about $9 - $10 each. I miss the good ol days when
we can pick up bulk lots. Win some, lose lots.
  • I believe my best purchase to date was Rafael Furcal's cleats from his 2nd homerun in 2003 for $80. Some guy was selling his entire collection and he was kinda desperate for money. It came with the original letter from ASI signed by Furcal himself (they have a contract for all of Furcal's game used for that year) so I bought it right away. After purchasing the cleats I looked for more information about the homerun and I found out that is was an 11th inning game-winning homerun!! I had also found a picture of him wearing the cleats from that night after hitting the homerun. That was probably my most best deal
  • At an antiques show in 1986 I bought a Clemente RC(Yes, '55 Topps #164) for $.50 from a coin dealer. I was only 12 and had to go check a price guide a few booths down at a card dealers table to see if it was a good deal before I bought it. The card was in poor condition, but still the only Clemente rookie I have ever owned and he is now one of my most favorite players/persons/heroes of all time. Buying that card actually prompted me to read and appreciate Clemente as I was born after he died. I was very stupid two years later though, and traded(at a card show in Sioux City, IA) it for a Mattingly rookie, an '88 Donruss rack pack with McGuire and Alomar showing and some other crap I can't remember. Damn I would love to find that card again! I would know it if I saw it for sure. That's my most nostalgic buy. More recently I bought a T205 Russ Ford raw for about $150 after grading. It got a PSA 7 and I sold it for $5k. Absolutely unreal. I keep looking feverishly for deals like that. Happy collecting!!

  • I have 2 stories from when i had my stor in the 1990's....
1st ...in 1996 i had a phone call asking if i purchased sports illustrated mags.
i said yes, so he brought the stuff down in a pickup truck. He had about 10 boxes full
of sports ill and other magazines. I didnt even go through the stuff. I aked him what he wanted for the lot. He said $150
I said thats fair enuff and paid him. I had all the issues from the 70's up til about 1992 if i can remember correctly. Now for the good stuff...1 of the boxes only had a couple magazines on top. Below them were baseball cards and hockey cards from the late 60's til the mid 70's. I had about 10 grand worth of cards in this box. I still remember pulling 8 reggie jackson rookies in row out of it image All the stars were there..ryans,bobby orr's etc!!

2nd story...it was the day before xmas in 1992. I had a customer come in that needed cash for christmas presents. He asked me if i bought cards. I said yes. He then handed me a small stack of cards and said he was looking for $1600.00 for the lot. The very 1st card was a 1952 topps mantle!!!! card was fair but still looked great! The stack was loaded with big money star cards. Aaron topps rc, 53 topps mantle, clemente rc,ted williams cards and more. I was starting to sweat as i was going through the stack! I couldnt pay the guy fast enough. Needless to say that was the best xmas present i got that year! I sold the 52 topps mantle for 5 grand and the 53 fr $1800.00

will never forget those 2 days as a store owner!

Great, great card. Much nicer than the one I bought for .50 cents. Couple of small tears and well worn. Like you said may not be your best bargain, but that is a great purchase. I know you will cherish it.

    I've been a Braves fan since 1990 - I'm an Andruw fan - in fact, I like both Jones's!

On the Brave GU side - I have GU bats of A. Jones, R. Furcal, D. Justice, R. Gant that I remember off hand; I would like some GU jerseys also - the only Brave I have is R. Belliard.

In a few weeks, it's time to start reading their web and see what's going on. Hope springs eternal every year of spring training.

I bought a 1958 Topps hockey common at the Toronto Expo about three years ago for $20, had it graded a 9 and sold it for about $900. That has to rank near the top of the list. Although my favorite card moment came when I was going through a buddy of mine's childhood collection about 4 years ago. He was (is) unemployed, in his 40's-- kind of a hard luck story. Anyway, I find two beautiful Bradshaw RC's and have them graded through Joe Tuttle. One comes back an 8, the other a 9, and I sell the 9 on the spot to Joe for $2000. This wasn't all that savvy of a move, in retrospect, but the SMR was like $1400 and I didn't know enough at the time to understand that the SMR can be, how shall we say, 'significantly off' on the prices of certain key low pop cards.

Joe gets a cashier's check for the full amount made out to my buddy, and I go over to his house and tell him I sold one of the Bradshaws-- and drop the cashier's check in front of him. Honest to God, his eyes got as wide as saucers. Even though it's been 4 years he STILL tells that story to anyone who will listen. To this day I've never had the courage to tell him I screwed up, and that he probably could have gotten another 2-3K for the card if I hadn't been so uninformed, so he's still elated with how the deal worked out and I guess I'm happy for him (though still a little sheepish whenever the subject comes up).
  • Story #1
It was 1987. I was 10 years old. My mom comes home and hands me a wooden box full of "old" cards she bought at a yard sale for $0.75. Most are in poor condition, but I was 10 and didn't care. I still have the best card from that box --- in fact I JUST got it graded from PSA after all these years.

    Here it is:
    image

    Story #2
It was again 1987. The neighbor asked me to mow her yard. One day, she brought me a shoebox of her ex-husband's cards. She wanted to find out their value. I brought my '86 yearly price guide and catalogued the value. After I'd finished, I handed over the list. The ex-husband showed up and was amazed at some of the values. He literally had 4 or 5 '61 Mantles and a ton of late 50's, early 60's stuff. He gave me several cards as a "thank you" for my work. Unfortunately, several of those cards were stolen by my babysitter's younger brother (who was 14 or 15).

I do have a few left. Here are a few of what was given me to back then. I had them graded recently as well:

back in 96-97 when OJ's rooke card was through the roof, I traded a NM version of the card to a dealer at a show for about 100 MINT 1968 commons that had come out of a vending box that had been opened right in front of me. I walked away with a little remorse at the time, but a few months later as that card dropped back to earth, I felt much better about the trade.
  • In 98-99 when the McGuire hype was the rage my buddy and I went in together and bought 4 vending boxes of 85 Topps. We pulled 5 Mac rookies out of the four boxes. We split them two apeice and sold the 5th one raw for $300. Worked out well to pay for the boxes and have two left over. Especially now as the price has drop considerably since then.

  • When I was 15 (1985) I bought about 50-60 1951 and 1952 Bowman cards from a friend of mine for $50. There were 3 1952 Warren Spahn's, a Larry Doby, and Johnny Mize as big names that I remember. There might have been others, but I gave away the Cardinals to my uncle, the ones he didn't have and over the years sold off almost all the rest. I gave the Doby to a friend of mine, whose dad knew him and had a letter from him. I figured he could have the letter and card matted for a nice piece for his dad.

Anyway, to make a long story longer, a few months later, there was a show in Springfield MO at the Howard Johnson's and Warren Spahn was there. I had gone there mainly to get Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, and Vince Coleman autographs but I managed to run into 2 older gents while I was walking around at the tables. I thought one of them looked like Spahn and asked if he would autograph the card, he laughed and said you want his autograph (pointing at Spahn) and handed the cards to Warren who autographed them for free. I was so psyched! I don't know if anyone would autograph for free at a show like that anymore.

I still have the 2 Spahn autographs:

Back about 3 years ago, I bought an album full of 1953 Topps cards (with some 1952 Topps and 1952 Bowman mixed in) for $1,000. I get it home and find out that I am 7 cards short of a set. Of course, the included in that 7 were Mantle and Mays. Anyway, I finished out the set for another $700 on good ole, reliable Ebay. Within a couple of weeks of buying the album, I list the set on Ebay and turned $1700 into $3400. Not a bad flip!

  • About 4 or 5 years ago I was at a show in Orlando, FL and purchased a raw 72 Tony Perez for $1. Sent it to PSA and it came back a 9. Sold it for $85. Not high dollar, but a good % profit. This is a great topic by the way!
  • Back in 1991 (I was 13 at the time) My Dad called some "newsletter" style call-in auction to see if a card recieved any bids on it...Which the card failed to get a opening bid. It was a 1957 Topps Football Checklist (Twin Blony, Unchecked). I am a huge Green Bay Packers fan and during that time I had developed a huge interest in the '57 Topps set because on the Bart Starr (which I got for my birthday a few months earlier) and the Paul Hornung rookies. The opening bid on the checklist was $150.00... The guy told Dad could have it for $75.00...Dad offered $50.00 for it and after some ho-humming around the guy accepted Dad's offer. Last year I joined PSA and got the card graded and it came back a PSA 6 with no qualifiers. Currently there is only 1 Twin Blony Checklist that has graded higher. I have only ideas of what the card would go for today in auction...but still in all a pretty good buy for $50.00.

raw card (vintage) in person - '32 U.S. Caramel Paul Waner in about Fair condition for 25 cents from a dealer's junk box at a show.

raw card (modern) in person - 1/1 Topps Finest Gold Xfractor Steve Blake rookie for 10 cents from a store dealer's dime box.

raw card (vintage) online - '60 Morrell Meats Drysdale in about Good condition for $1.67 including shipping (seller did a poor listing job)

raw card (modern) online - Score Rookie Preview Jerry Porter autographed for $1.67 including shipping (same seller as the Drysdale, another poor listing job)

graded card in person - probably a '73/'74 ABA Scoring Leaders (Erving/Issel) PSA 8 for $4 - the card normally sells for at least $10 on ebay.

graded card online - 1959 Topps Dolan Nichols PSA 6 that the seller didn't realize was the No Option Line variation for less than $3 (including shipping) - SMR is $75, and the card sells in that range.

memorabilia item - UCLA mini helmet (new in bag) for 50 cents at a garage sale. I got it signed by Wendell Tyler at last year's National.

auto/game-used item - probably the 4 game-used hockey sticks by NHL short-time players (I think the longest had an 11-game career) for $20 total - a dealer at the end of the last day of the NHL All-Star Fantasy in L.A. was likely as happy not to have to lug them back as I was to get them.

group/lot purchase - $225 for a huge lot at a thrift store (somebody probably donated part of a deceased relative's collection) featuring 2 file boxes full of 800 count boxes ranging from early '80s near sets (like '82 Donruss missing only Ripken and both Ryans) to smaller sets from the early '90s (Stadium Club football, etc.), 4 monster boxes full of '72 through '78 commons and stars (including some HOFers), 2 more monster boxes of modern stars and superstars, a large tub with a Mickey Mantle autograph model store model glove, a couple shoeboxes of higher-value cards ('60s HOFers, '72 football high numbers, etc.), a stack of old boxing magazines, collectibles magazines from the '80s, programs, and yearbooks, and miscellaneous stuff ranging from 2 Starting Lineups to promo card sheets to stadium giveaway pins and coins.
Honorable mention goes to $60 for about 150 late '60s and '70s hockey stars/HOFers (raw, mainly NM and NM but OC) and about 250 modern hockey stars/HOFers from a card store closing sale - total Beckett Hi price of about $1500.

as one of my first purchases in the realm of vintage cards in early 2002 I bought a BVG 4.5 Willie Mays 1954 topps card for 180 (bought it because of the PERFECT centering). I had until then only collected modern and AT THAT TIME....BGS was highly respected and "as tough as they come". 10's and even 9.5's were rare. Anyway. i thought i had made a mistake (by buying BVG) and put the card up thinking..oh well...its prolly trimmed. Little did I know the rough cut edge, which BVG had erroneously taken off for, was evidence enough that the card was not trimmed at all!!! In fact, that was the major issue of the card and BVG slammed it. Flash forward to late 2006 and I finally decide to crack it out of the BVG holder. I luckily accomplish this without harming the card and sent it in to psa. Today its in a psa holder with the grade of...

    7

image 180 for a 550 card which would prolly go for more becaue of its nice centering is prolly my best deal ever.

    Got a couple---

First bought a lot of cards cheap and couple weeks later as I was going through some 1960 Fleer, I realized I had #80 Left Grove but the back was the Pepper Martin. It had a small crease but still looked pretty nice. I wasn't at all aware of how truely rare this card was but knew it had some value. Listed on ebay with what I thought was a "stupid" buy-it-no of $750. Sold in less than an hour! Wish I still had it!
Second, about 4-5 years ago, a guy had an auction with some great graded and raw cards. Says he might sell to the highest bidder if the reserve didn't get met. I really don't think that anyone believed the auction was real...including myself.
Auction ends without reserve being met and I'm high bidder at $800....he offers me the lot. Well, shows he only lives about hour and a half away, so I offer to meet him in a public place with cash. Found out he was a college student and needed money to repair his car. I don't remember all of the cards but here is a partial list and what I sold them for.

2001 Topps Walter Payton Rookie Reprint Auto--PSA 10---$650
    1958 Topps Mantle A.S. PSA 8 --$300
    1962 Topps Brock PSA 8--- $300
    1981 Topps Bird/Magic/Etc --PSA 8 $275
    1968 Topps Nolan Ryan--raw-- $600
1968 Topps Bench PSA 8---Don't remember
    1968 Topps Drysdale---raw--still have--Might grade an 8
There were probably a dozen other cards that I sold that I can't remember, but these were the highlights

Finally--not card related---Bought a WWI Savage-Lewis machine gun in parts for $400(no register included so couldn't be used) but had the bi-pod as well. Sold the parts on Ebay on New Years Eve 5-6 years ago---brought over $3k. Happy new year to me!

Here are some of my better deals that come to mind....

I purchased a 1971 All-Star game autographed N.L. baseball for about $250. The ball includes autographs of Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Willie McCovey, Willie Stargell, Tom Seaver, Sparky Anderson and others.

I bought a 1968 Patridge Meats Johnny Bench rookie for about $40. I had it graded a PSA 8 and is currently the highest graded example.

I purchased a 1977 Hostess panel with Rose, Carew, and Seaver for about $20. After hand cutting the card around the dotted lines I submitted it to PSA and it graded a 10.

    Here's another.

I showed one trade, one raw to graded and here's one already graded:

    image

1994 or 5 Greg Manning Auction at the National.

    I bid the minimum - I think it was 4 or 550$?

For what ever reason - no one else bid. Tho I will admit, this card is not a top seller - still a good buy!

These are actual 1952 Topps Mickey Mantles bought in the late 80's and early 90's from collectors. Mind boggling as all this must seem to you they were all real and graded by PSA and SGC. I would never buy a raw card on Ebay. These cards are just the tip of the iceberg of all the great deals i've done in sportscards.
  • Eight (8) 1975 GAI cellos from BBCKid.

Yielded 4-5 10s and a Hank Aaron Highlight 9 that paid for the entire lot plus grading fees; and then some.

Still have several solid raw cards remaining.

The Aaron, by the way, was graded an 8 on his first visit to PSA. But he went back for a little more love. And got it.

Redlegs, any tips on cutting the Hostess panel? I have two I'd like to try to cut.
