We're on the west coast with the kids too old to get too excited about Santa stopping by. We're anxiously awaiting our granddaughter's arrival. We'll open presents later and I'll try to share what we receive then.
Hope we all get what we want -- perhaps not all that we deserve!!

I did leave that a little too ambiguous, didn't I! I should've said our 10-month old granddaughter, Samantha Jayne. I should have some fun pictures of her later...
Enjoy the day!
P.S. I could add that I do know ONE present I'm getting -- because I bought it! It's a 1987/1991 Twins Worlds Series' DVD. It'll have lots of shots of Kirby and some wonderful memories of some exciting times in my life!

Bunker, Gotta love the cute little Samantha's in our lives, eh?! Here's another of our Sammie with her favorite gift:
I was fortunate enough to receive some nice gifts to go along with the fun family time, including a big can of cashews (an old tradition), some Lindt chocolates (a new tradition), a couple music CDs, a couple movies and a couple books. Also, in addition to a MN Twins World Series DVD I mentioned in an earlier post, my wife bought me a 2006 Fleer factory set. I'm thinking about seeing what other sets they may have in stock. I've always been partial to Topps and Donruss. Since this is Donruss' last year, I'd like to get that one if possible.
Oh yeah, and I also received my annual copy of an Ansel Adams calendar (I love his work) and a couple picture frames to display whatever I want in my card room. The year has been very good to us.
Beautiful pics of family everyone! For me, thats the best part of the holidays, being with family.
What did I get for Christmas? About 50 assorted packs of cards from friends and family, Patriots keychain light and football flannel pants from my MIL, hockey packs from one daughter, and a Red Sox freezer mug from my other daughter. It must have killed her to buy the Red Sox mug, the poor misguided girl is a Yankees fan!
Now my wife hooked me up REAL good! She got me a subscription to Beckett Baseball and one to the Beckett Baseball Quarterly magazines. She got me this HUGE hardcover book (must weigh 10 pounds and be 2' x 1'!) called "Historic Ballparks: A Panoramic View". It is filled with stats and pictures of every major ballpark from the turn of the century till modern day. It is one sweet book!
I also collect McFarlane Sport Pick figures as well as cards. My wife, God love her, got me a figure I always wanted but thought I would never own because it is so dam expensive. When I opened that last gift up and found a super chase Tom Brady, I was thrilled to bits! Yeah, my wife is pretty awesome. I'll post a pic for those who don't know what a SP is.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! I'd like to take this time to say THANK YOU to everyone on this board and for being so kind and giving to each other. I appreciate what each and every one of you bring to the board and I am proud to be a part of this CU family. Happy Holidays everyone!
I don't post very often, but I go on the site quiet a bit. Anyway, my Wife and In-Laws got me the following cards for Christmas:
1959 Topps PSA 5 Mickey Mantle 1983 Fleer PSA 9 Ryne Sandberg 1971 Topps PSA 6 Ernie Banks 1963 Topps PSA 6 Roger Maris 1985 Topps PSA 9 Roger Clemens 1966 Topps PSA 6 Bob Gibson 1967 Topps PSA 8 Fergie Jenkins 1984 Donruss PSA 8 Don Mattingly
I basically collect hall of famers and superstar players from 1954-2006, but most of my collection focuses on cards from 1959-1985. I usually buy PSA 5 or 6 for cards from 1954-1959, PSA 6 or 7 from 1960-1973, PSA 7 or 8 from 1974-1979 and PSA 8 or 9 from 1980 on. I own about 650 PSA graded cards and have no 10's. Right now I am trying to get 30 hall of famers or superstars (Rose, Garvey, Dawson, Murphy) from every Topps regular issue from 1959 to 1985. Right now I need seven cards to have 30 cards from every year from 1969 to 1979. I need a 1971 Frank Robinson, Gaylord Perry, Jim Palmer and Phil Niekro. A 1977 Gaylord Perry and Dennis Eckersley and a 1979 Stargell. Why 30 cards? That is how many fit in the display cases I buy and it usually covers all the best players from each year.
Here is were I stand for each year:
1959 - 22: The only major names I need are Aaron, Gibson, Spahn, Mays A.S., Aaron A.S. 1960 - 1: I only have the Whitey Ford. 1961 - 7 1962 - 9 1963 - 8 1964 - 10 - I got Mays, Mantle and Koufax, so I am off to a good start. 1965 - 3 1966 - 10 1967 - 24 - I need Carew, B Robby, Seaver, Perez, Niekro and Palmer. I love the look of this set. 1968 - 22 - The big names I need are Mays and Ryan.
I have also made a pretty big dent in the 80's sets. I have almost completed 1980, 1981, 1984. I finished 1983, but still need about 17 each for 1982 and 1985. For some reason, there are not a lot of 1982's in grade 8 and 9 on Ebay. I also have complete sets from 1969, 1973, 1974 and 1976-2006. I am about 100 cards short of a 1959 set. I like set building, but my real passion is buying the PSA cards.
I collect like most people do, to reconnect with my childhood. When I was a kid my father used to drive me around to the local card shows were I would blow a lot of my cash on the overproduced late 80's early 90's stuff. However, I did manage to build a decent vintage collection because I always enjoyed the history of the game. My Father used to tell me stories about when my Grandfather would take him to Detroit to watch the Tigers games. He was always a fan of Rocky Colavito and Al Kaline. About 4 or 5 years ago I got back into collecting and sold off my raw collection with the exception of my Topps sets and spent all my money on PSA cards. Though, SGC cards look nice, I like the uniform appearance of having all PSA in my collection - I am a bit of a neat freak. The oldest card I have is a 1954 Topps PSA 5 Ted Williams #250 that my wife bought me for my 30th birthday. The most valuable is the PSA 5 1959 Mantle that I just got for Christmas. Though, I don't collect for investment reasons, I still like knowing that my collection does have value. My favorite cards I own are the 1963 Topps Koufax - I don't know why, I just like the pose and look of the card and the 1959 Topps A.S. Mantle. I remember when I was kid, a friend of my Dad's gave me a shoe box full of 1959 Topps cards to go through for him and it was the first Mickey Mantle card I was ever able to touch. Unfortunately, I had to give the cards back to him after I organized them, but I always wanted to own one.
My wife likes baseball too and is accepting of my passion for collecting. She even agreed to let me display my cards in our finished basement. I would attach scans, but I don't have a scanner.
I realize I went beyond telling you what I got for Christmas, but it is not often I get to share my passion with others. Thanks for listening to my long winded message and have a Happy New Year.
Thanks and I am sure your husband would be happy to know the only four football cards I own are a 1989 Score Troy Aikman, 1990 Score Emmitt Smith, 1989 Score Michael Irvin and 1978 Topps Tony Dorsett. I am a huge Cowboys fan and I could not part with those cards when I sold my old collection.
I like the ideal of using the graded card displays one per a year. I might try something like that but one decade a case. (Don't have near the room to follow your lead.)
Mark
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Ha! Are you a life long Dallas fan too? They have been Matt's since he was a kid.
Last night at his mom's his older brother was saying hey Matt remember when you were crying because the Cowboys lost the 81 championship game when you were 12? LOL!!

I have been a fan since I can remember, which was about 1979 or 1980. I don't remember seeing much of the Staubach era, but the 1981 NFC Championship game haunts me. However, we did get our vengeance in 1992 when the Cowboys went into San Fran and kicked their butts. I had the pleasure of watching that game with a 49ers fan. Unfortunately, since the Cowboys signed T.O. I have a hard time rooting for them sometimes. I felt the same way in 1989 when they dumped Landry, it took the emergence of classy guys like Aikman, Emmitt and Daryl Johnston to make me really like them again.
Mark,
I have 4 - 30 card cases that I store select sets in and rotate them from time to time. I also have a 50 card case that I store my favorite cards in. I don't have the room to display all the sets without making the walls look too cluttered. I will probably end up displaying 6 or 7. Right now I have the 1969, 1972, 1976 and 1983 sets on display. It gives a pretty good mix of the different years. Once I complete the 59 set, I will put that up. It is neat to look at the different years and see how the players changed or if they are even still playing. It also captures the history of the game over a long period of time.

I am also a huge Cowboy fan...and I too remember hiding in my closet crying when the Niners beat the Cowboys.....I still get Post-traumatic symptoms whenever I see the video of "the catch!" My Grandparents bought me a Staubach jersey and helmet for Christmas in 1977...I use to wear them while watching the games on the small black and white tv in my room. Staubach jersey turned into a Danny White jersey in my early teen years. I also remember breaking my Dad's favorite chair because I was standing on it and jumped up to celebrate the Cowboys scoring during the Super Bowl against Denver....I was a pretty big kid, and the bottom gave out..boy was Dad ticked!
Many tools for my new workshop (sliding compund mitre saw, bar clamps, chisels, wrenches, bench vise, biscuit joiner, etc.) from my parents and brother.
iPod nano from my wife... she opened the package and proloaded my favorite albums on it before christmas
Nothing sports related this year, except a Montgomery Biscuits sweatshirt from my brother.
1959 is one of my favorites years - bought the Mickey AS for that year at a card show when I was a kid and ever since i've been slowly trying to get the set built.
For X-Mas I got some lower grade 1914-15 Cracker Jack cards.

1961 - 7
1962 - 9
1963 - 8
1964 - 10 - I got Mays, Mantle and Koufax, so I am off to a good start.
1965 - 3
1966 - 10
1967 - 24 - I need Carew, B Robby, Seaver, Perez, Niekro and Palmer.

Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Last night at his mom's his older brother was saying hey Matt remember when you were crying because the Cowboys lost the 81 championship game when you were 12? LOL!!
<< <i>Ha! Are you a life long Dallas fan too? They have been Matt's since he was a kid.

Okay, I wont tell anyone you cried last week too.
Mark,
I have 4 - 30 card cases that I store select sets in and rotate them from time to time.

Nice card - 1959 Topps PSA 5 Mickey Mantle
1959 is one of my favorites years - bought the Mickey AS for that year at a card show when I was a kid and ever since i've been slowly trying to get the set built.
For X-Mas I got some lower grade 1914-15 Cracker Jack cards.
