Baseball Cards Magazine insert cards...

Hey guys,

First of all, I should have been more active on these great boards long ago! Somewhere along the line I forgot about this board and rediscovered it today and won't be leaving anytime soon. There are some great discussions here, especially for those who collect old cards just as much as the new!

Anyway, my question regards the old Baseball Cards magazines of the mid-80's to early 90's. I have a bunch of these lying around, and in each one there is 3-6 cards (unperforated, you'd have to cut them out with scissors/blade) to a sheet. The designs mimic those from the 60's and 70's. I found some cool ones, like a Pudge RC among them.

Has anyone compiled a checklist of these? Beckett doesn't recognize this release. One player I collect is Jeff Ballard, and wouldn't be shocked to find out he had a card in an issue from 1989 or 1990.

If anyone wants to help with a community checklist, I can compile the cards I have into a list and post it here. I subscribed to this magazine when I was young, so I have a few my mom had cut out with an exacto for me then, and then many are still stapled into the magazine, untouched and uncut.

hmm, I'm not as familiar with that one matt, I remember it but I don't think I ever had an issue. Here is what I was talking about:

But that other mag you show then has a whole new lot of cards to worry about :-| do you remember how long that was in circulation?

BTW, in my November 1991 issue of Baseball Cards it lists a checklist for the first 11 insert series. I imagine that is for that year though since I remember cards from 89 and 90 too. I'll list the checklist here in a moment...

I always thought that many of these looked real cool. I have a page of 4 cards replicating the Bowman Baseball Television Series (1955? I could be wrong) but it has Griffey Jr. and Frank Thomas and although they're worthless I still dig 'em. Thanks for bringing up the checklist - great work.

yeah I can't imagine the monetary value is that high, although to crazed single player collectors like myself, I imagine you could go nuts looking for these...

I'll add more to the checklist when I find some more of these...

You know now that I think about it, I think that SCD Price Guide was a re-naming of the Baseball Cards magazine...

I had the #1-6, 8 & 10 card inserts pulled out of the magazines and was able to fill in some of the question marks above. I'm sure I've got the other magazines stored away -- probably with Kirby Puckett on or in them.

Hey guys, Barfvader was kind enough to e-mail me scans of the checklists from the standard catalogue. I was ignorant to their existence in this book. Anyway, didn't see a Ballard listed, so I guess thats a good thing ;-) might have been a toughie to track down...

Anyone have a good idea on how to cut these if you wanted to? is it best to cut a little around the border or would a "perfect" card be cut exactly how it's presented on the sheet...

Does PSA grade these? If so, does anyone know if there were any Raphael Palmeiro cards made?

DOAsaturn, if you're going to sell those I'd be interested in the sheet with the Greenwell.

I, too, wonder if PSA grades these. If so, you could probably turn a few bucks with the player collectors as I can't imagine there are too many of these floating around (and even less graded).

My guess would be that PSA doesn't grade them as they are unlisenced, but who knows these days.

The SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards list all these, 1983 to 1993, and includes "prices"

I have a few issues from 1982-1984.

One has a Chuck Conners replica (The Rifleman). I think he played pro ball for a bit before turning to acting.

Conners did play briefly for the Dodgers and Cubs. He also had a very brief stint with the Boston Celtics. Of Branch Rickey Conners said..." He has ball players and he has money, and he does not like mixing the two"
