PCGS POP REPORT FOR FOREIGN

I spoke with Ron Guth at the St. Louis show. An expanded version of pop reports is coming , perhaps similar to the US version. Would that cause you to have more of your foreign graded at PCGS? It will for me.

I think PCGS has a golden opportunity to do well with world coins but they need to do more in terms of demonstrating they want to have a serious share of this market. While they are doing something with registry sets, they need to go the extra yard to convince world collectors that there is value to slabs and quality in terms of a numeric grade which means something significant in the world coin market that extends beyond borders.

Just one collector's thoughts condensed into the Readers Digest version.

Unless PCGS starts recognises varieties NGC does it would be very difficult to get those coins.

No, I have no slabbed world coins and I plan to keep it that way.

  • My entire collection of Canada stuff is PCGS, except what has just come in lately. The auction results are so much better for PCGS at Heritage/Goldbergs. I have a few other world items graded by PCGS, but they take so long to get your stuff back that I don't see any point to sending them stuff that I'm going to just sell anyway. I do find that the return on the investment of grading is good when you sell on ebay, I think there is a place for slabbing and I think that having the grade helps to verify that the coin is good and not swag/cleaned/garbage. I still think that you need to put up great pics but the slab helps IMHO.

    Varieties need to be standardized

That is good news. Any ETA?

As painful as it is, all of my personal collection has thus far been graded by PCGS. NGC is far too sloppy in not only what constitutes a gem coin, but in consistently applying that standard. I cringe at nearly all NGC gold under MS64, and probably 1/3 of all NGC gold graded as MS62/63 is really circulated....IMO, a travesty, and the reason that some series of gold coins by them get ZERO respect.....of course, this is just MHO.image

Every now and then NGC does get them right though......oops, I cracked this one out and let Ron's lads have a shot......gee whiz, NGC got one right.image

I did not ask Ron when an ETA is but I think this is going to be a fairly high priority for them. I think they do want to capture more of the world coin market and understand that if the Europeans and others get on board with the idea of slabs, they have some serious penetration. Many of you may know Karl Stephens, a foreign dealer, who as of this years ANA, is a PCGS grader too.

As a collector, no. I don't slab the coins in my collection.

As a dealer, no. Not that the pop report won't help, but it's not enough to put them ahead of NGC.
