2006 silver britannia proof has arrived

I don't know how long these have been up for sale on the Royal mint website but here they are. Limited to 2750, or is that a reflection of the interest they will generate at the bargain price of 47.50GBP

2006 proof brit

Needless to say I ordered one!

did you actually get one ? Id be suprised if it didn't already sell out...
  • Good question, I have no idea when it went on sale and the Royal Mint website has been vague about sell outs in the past. My hunch is the high price will put off buyers, so I may get one

    I'll keep you posted

  • Yikes, 47.50 United Kingdom Pounds = 89.4328 United States Dollars

You'd pay $90 for one ounce modern bullion coin?

Nice looking, but the price is a little over the top.

Pardon me for hijacking the thread: Cosmic, are you buying a VW? I believe they have a promotion where they give away a free electric guitar with a VW purchase. image

I've seen the Mayer and Slash commercials for it. However, I doubt I will buy a VW to aquire a guitar.

myself ? I think the britannia proofs if kept in perfect shape will be something your childrens children find to be quite valuable, especially as world coins take thier rightful place in the realm of US numismatics. anyway, my impulse purchases are savved for gold coins, so Ill leave the silver britannia proofs for the next guy image
  • I received my 2006 proof several days ago. Here's a quick scan of Britannia:

For comparison, here's my 1998 Britannia:

Doesn't the '98 look sharper, and the '06 frostier?

  • According to the Royal Mint site, the price for it in USD is $75

I think that's a bit pricey, especially for a coin with just under 1 troy ounce of silver.

Add to that $9.95 for shipping and it becomes a too expensive.

What's the market like for these? What is a, say, 2002 going for?

A cup of Starbucks coffee will run you an average of $3.50 in London. Makes the coins seem cheap.

Boy, Britannia sure looks mean in these larger silver formats (vs. the gold).

  • I like the 1/10oz gold britannia proofs too though

Anything larger and I would go for a sovereign (or 5 pound)

The BRM didn't offer a silver proof Britannia in 2002; only an uncirculated. But that year's uncirculated looks like a reverse proof.

APMEX is selling the 2002 BU for around $25.

Thanks. I guess I picked the wrong year for a comparison. I don't know anything about Britannias, other than what I read about them the other day on the BRM site.

In any case, the proof appears to be way too expensive. I will admit it's a beautiful coin, but to me it's not worth $85 to someone else, it may even be cheap. YMMV
  • For comparison last years proof Britannia sold for 35GBP from the Royal Mint, I think that had a mintage of 10,000 though

  • I last TTT for this thread as I just heard that the coin arrived today, I had it shipped to my parents in England to save on the postage charge. They just bring all my coins over the pond when they visit

It was $75 when I placed my order back in September. Did the price fluctuate between then and now, or is the BRM giving us in the USA a discount of sorts?

  • Interesting to note that the maximum allowed mintage for the regular 2006 silver proof is 250 less than the max for the selectively gold-plated Britannia Silhouette set they sold earlier this year. Though I wouldn't be surprised if they sell more of the regular proof, since the Silhouette set was so expensive... did anyone actually buy a set? I did not, mainly because I didn't care for the look.

Uhh, and maybe the price - 525 seems pretty high. I guess the 20th Ann. Eagles put it to shame, or at least the gold...All relative, shudder to think what demand would do to an American Eagle with that mintage.

I bought the silhouette set, I just haven't seen it in hand yet as it was shipped to the parents in England and it hasn't been carried over the pond yet. I'm not sure if it sold out but I guess it did. The limited mintage (as well as the design) attracted me. But the price made me have a bad case of buyers remorse when it hit the credit card! I took a gamble on it and I'm not sure it will pay off, the design was not endorsed by the original artist Philip Nathan

Edited to add - I can't see the silhouette set on the Royal Mint website any more so it looks like a sell out. Also if you want to talk about big price mark up check this out

OK, not going to hijack the thread but 170 USD for a 1/10 oz piece is ridiculous - that would be 125 for the minting and packaging!
