Australian Coins go wild at Spink!

I just finished phone bidding at Spink. Wow! An Adelaide Pound in 63 at GBP 26K hammer? 1855 Sovereign in AU 53 at GBP 6K hammer? A holed but otherwise CH XF/AU 1855 Half Sovereign at GBP 15K hammer? And the silver was even wilder, especially for the generally unexciting quality. Of course there were a very few "deals", but for the most part this was very frustrating.

Anyway, I'm waiting for the phone to ring again. Next up is an incredible little run of Great Britain Trade Dollars, including proofs!

Australian Gold has been crazy for a while now especially early stuff and high grade.

High grade silver has started going stupid, surprising to see lower grade stuff going well though.

One of the major probs with Australian silver is that the quality can be quite variable with a coin straight from the presses lucky to reach MS64 most years.

For example, there was one year in the 20's (can't remember which exactly) that most of the dies supplied by London failed very quickly in the first week, so they had to greatly reduce striking pressure to make the remaining dies last.

I started my collection of silver 3d through crowns because US and Canadian coins got too expensive, and I'd hate to have to stop the set because I can't afford the ones I want from NZ, Southern Rhodesia, East Africa, etc.
