Eat your Wheaties!

Oldshep and I hit a small local show in Spokane, WA today. As usual, we had a good time chatting about and looking at coins. The hours just flew by.
The highlight of the show was a dealer that was liquidating someone's old accumulation of world coins. There must have been six feet of table covered in boxes with most of the coins in envelopes so you had to open every one to see what was in it. I don't think the dealer had the time to mess with them, as he was pricing them to make them go away quickly. I swear that of the 40-50 coins I bought he only looked up maybe three in the Krause. And from the final tally, I think he went by the 40-50 year old pricing on the envelopes for most of them. image
Anyway, one of the interesting things I found in the envelopes were various world coins packaged as Wheaties promotionals. I'm guessing this was during the 50s. I didn't have a clue at first when I pulled out a St. Pierre & Miq. 1F sealed in cellophane with info on the country printed on it. I thought (hoped) it might be some kind of mint packaging. When I found a second one with a different coin, I noticed it said Wheaties on it. While they're not Cheerios Sac dollars, image , they're still kind of cool. If you're interested in one with a nice looking 1952 Swiss centime in it, just say so and I'll pick a winner next week.
I'll have to leave the pictures of the bounty up to Shep, since I didn't bring a camera with me...

Spiny and I had a great time at the show, this was a small show but had a lot of world coins unlike most shows where you really have to search. We both scored some neat coins at very good prices. I will try to photo some of the coins when I can get the chance to sort through them.

Thanks for a fun day Steve.

    Where did you locate that?

  • It was on eBay. Hey John, do you remember the Thailand commemorative? The one with the busts of the king? and queen? and I think it's silver. If you remember it, would you mind seeing if you can find it in the Krause for me? I couldn't find that one on eBay.

Sounds like a good time. Please enter me in your giveaway.

I went to ITT in Spokane about 15 years ago but since I was in school my interest (and wallet) in coins was at an all time low.

  • Well, Both my new coins and I left Idaho on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we took different paths to get here. The good news is that the coins caught up to me today and all is good in the world (my world anyway). Here are pictures of the giveaway coin.

  • This coin is why I love finding deals like we ran across at the show. You just never know what treasures you'll find. I knew this was a SF struck version because it was mintmarkless, but I couldn't remember if 1920 or 1921 was the key date. The holder was marked down to 25c from 50c, so I figured it was just the somewhat elusive date. When I got home I looked it up and then for the last two days I've been wondering, wow, was that really a 1921... image

  • The dealer just said "Merry Christmas" when I asked how much this set was. He also gave me a green Gulden.

Steve that 1921 is a real looker - you found some real treasures at that show - when you hit that table full of little envelopes, you were like a kid in a candy storeimage
    It was a fun day.

That 50 cent looks great if you can get the green off. Those coins are scarcer than most people think in BU.
  • That's exactly why I was interested in it. The PVC didn't look like it had damaged that coin yet.
It's about 90% removed now. Should be a real nice coin by tomorrow.

I don't understand why this coin has somewhere between 35 and 40 chopmarks on it, but it's super cool. image

I don't either. I was hoping someone here could shed some light on that, or maybe recognize some of the marks.

Dang, it looks like you scored big time. Congrats on the centime!

Merchants and trading companies usually chopmarked coins with their own chops if they felt it was of proper weight and fineness. Even if it had other chops on it, they wanted to check the coins themselves.
