I'm on the record as saying that I loathe the Yankees, but I'm becoming increasingly enamoured with the nickname 'The Sandman' for Mariano Rivera. The more I think about it the cooler it gets.
Which brings me to my question-- what are your favorite nicknames for athletes?

He got that name from a local sportswriter when Ervin was still in high school, the writer used that word
in one of his newspaper columns to describe the amazing things Johnson was doing on the basketball court and the name stuck.
Just some trivia for ya.

Nicknames that are a mouthful just aren't as good. Yelling out "Stan the Man" to a guy just isn't as effective as saying, "Hey Nails!" So Nails is a good one...but how about....
BABE! "Hey Babe, how many beers did you have last night?" "Babe, that looks like syphillis, you better get that checked out."
BUT...
I agree with Michigan with MAGIC! That has to be the best, most appropriate, and most used(as in calling the player by his nickname instead of his real name, as that is the essence of a nickname) nickname in the history of sports.
The one that I really like is Dick "Night Train" Lane
Allen The Answer Iverson
Ken
<< <i>If Im not mistaken there was a DB for Kansas City back in the late 60's or early 70's nicknamed the "Hammer" lol and he actually got knocked out in the Super Bowl against Green Bay ? Anybody got info?
That would be Fred "The Hammer" Williamson. He played for the Raiders in the 1960's.
