i brought a bunch of recently recovered and clean coins to the banks coin machine.....in the change return i found 16 wheat pennies before i started my batch.....has anyone ever heard of the coin machines spitting back wheats?.....hh

    I find them all the time in the CoinStar machine at my local grocery store. I find more wheats in that machine than I do the ground!

  • Wheat cents were made from different alloy (bronze and copper alloy for later cents) than today's cents, which are copper plated zinc. Maybe the cost of design the machine that can sort all cents is far exceeding the benefit since there aren't many wheat cents are out there in circulation. Just some thought.

    I pull wheaties, silver and foreign stuff out of the CoinStar all the time.
