First Strike Privy Marks?

messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,078 ✭✭✭✭✭
How long before the Mint expands their product line by adding "Privy Marks" to early strikes and coins included in special sets?

  • One year? It actually sounds like a great idea. At least we'd know which were first strikes. They could do the first 100 coins on each new die.
They could also do last strikes. That would be cool if they would let the dies get old and crack as they did years ago. I'd love a nice die crack on a 2007 SAE.

Not a bad Idea at all. It solves the problem of TPG

giving the coins the proper designation without the need

for sealed, non inspected boxes. The coins could be sold by the Mint thru

use of a lottery to insure fairness.

  • Why does anyone care if a coin is one of the slabbed First Strikes. I believe that there is only one first strike, that being the very first business strike coin out of the very first press that makes them. I have recently read, the mint hasn't kept track of most of those. Every so often they have given it out to a VIP in a PR event. So whether I have #100 or #100,000 does it matter. What might matter is the quality of the strike and condition of the coin. Perhaps we should say buy the coin, not the first strike. As to privy marks, I have been in a Privy and the mark doesn't last that long. In all seriousness the Royal Canadian Mint uses privy marks. To me it is a gimick. Unless you have a US Mint certified coin as being the first strike, then it would mean nothing to me. In fact, a first strike from the US Mint might be the first circulation strike, but there were probably many prior strikes to adjust the equipment. So what the heck is a "real" first strike.

    I agree with Planchet.

In the end, this First Strike nonsense would hurt the uninformed consumers and that isn't what we want to do to the hobby

How do you be in a privy? What mark doesn't last that long? All the privy marks I have seen would last the life of the coin. What, are you carrying the coins around in your pockets?

The privy could be given to the first 100 coins struck from each new die. It would ensure that only the real first strikes would be designated as such. YES it IS a gimmick. But so is the current "First Strike" BS that is going on now. I'm just trying to eliminate the guesswork and ambiguity of the current designation.

Gimmick or not, it is going on right now. Privy marks would eliminate that and limit the designation to a few, select coins. People obviously want to collect first strike designated coins or there would not be so many TPG's slabbing them. The privy mark would eliminate the crap that is going on right now.

Horrible idea, IMHO. I think the slabbers should cease all First Strike nonsense, denounce them, and recall all extant First Strike holders for reholdering.

Hi Jonathan, a Privy is a slag term for an outhouse.

  • Hi Jonathan

You asked "How do you be in a privy? What mark doesn't last that long". I was making a joke. A Privy is a slang term for an outhouse. The mark on your rear end you receive from sitting in a Privy is what doesn't last that long. Sorry about my attempt at humor. Hope you got the joke in the end.

I really don't care if somethng is slabbed First Strike™. A mint-applied mark, whether used for first strikes or special packaging would:

    - Enable eople to open their sets to look at the coins they bought without fear of losing misguidedly coveted First Strike™ status.
    - Not dillute mintages of coins made for specific sets when coins are later offered outside the sets.

    But also:

    - Enable the Mint to sell more stuff by forcing people to buy certain sets to get certain coins
    - Give the TPGs more types of coins to grade.
    - Play into the hands of TV coin hucksters.

If these coins with the privy marks carry a premium, how long before someone creates a punch and starts adding his own privy marks?

They showed up on the 2021 CC and O Morgans, but I am not sure what they are or what it means.

These are essentially special mint marks.

The Philadelphia Mint made three versions: one w/o a mint mark to recognize the historic Philadelphia Mint, and two with privy marks to recognize the historic mints in NOLA and CC.

The privy marks look like this:

This is quite interesting. A thread from 2006. First strike/ early release seems like a non issue.
Interested in hearing from those like @messydesk about first day of issue. Even more interesting how about “advanced release “ Didn’t see that coming but some did note that change was coming. Also 06 was the release of exactly what was predicted. A coin only available in a set. Ase reverse proof 🧐

I still stand by what I said in 2006, except with the typos fixed. Looking at the timestamp, I'm blaming those on jet lag.

Maybe they can put a Privy mark on Bitcoins. People would definitely be buying the holder and not the coin.
