Anaconda Rare Coins - Some New Purchases from Long Beach & Show Report

Well, the overall tone of this Long Beach show was "slow". On Wednesday, while we were setting up, we actually did pick up a couple of coins that we were excited about including an 1868 Seated Dollar in NGC PF66 CAMEO with outstanding original color. Proof Seated material has been gaining momentum from our perspective and we feel that it is an area that still has room to grow. Some of the other areas that were hot but now are cooling off (and I for one am glad to see this) is common date Morgans and mid-grade classic commemoratives. In my opinion, it's about time.

A thin veil representing market softness was laid over an overall strong market at Long Beach. Those who looked hard enough could easily see through this transparent and temporary hiccup if they took note of the following factors. :

1. Many dealers and collectors did a huge amount of buying at the Denver ANA through both the auctions and from what dealers came back with from the show. Since Long Beach was scheduled almost immediately after this large buying exhibition, this contributed to the lack of available funds for dealers to purchase with at Long Beach.

2. Gold Gold Gold. With so many dealers keeping a large a portion of their inventory in bullion and generic gold, it's no wonder that the kick-in-the-balls gold took right before the start of the show had an adverse effect. With gold dropping, dealers were not enthusiastic about adding to their inventories.

3. The bulk of the decline in dealer interest was in areas that were destined to correct price-wise. For instance, common date MS64-MS66 Morgan dollars and mid-grade available commemoratives seemed to be very soft. Since many dealers carry alot of these commodity type coins, they too were hesitant to add to their existing inventories.

The good news is that those who specialize in early type, and exceptionally nice coins did fairly well at the show. We did manage to sell a couple of very rare patterns, most of our key date collector coins, and our VF30 high relief St. Gaudens among the other more common coins we tend to sell alot of at shows like this. Long Beach simply proved what we have been telling clients for quite some time. Buy the best you can afford at the time because there will be more interest in it when it comes time to sell. Stay away from commodity type coins because they will be the first to take a hit if the market slows down. Overall, the market is still strong but did recently suffer the obvious effects of too many big buying shows too close together coupled with a market correction for generic Morgans and a drop in the price of gold.
