  • The vendor is an older gentleman who says he has bunches of old stuff like this. I'm waiting like a little kid for next week to get here.
  • Here is a better link to a mint back.

Great find! The black and white are 1910-12 Sweet Caporal (P2) pins. The 2005 catalog has them priced at $20.00 NM, $10.00 EX, and $6.00 VG. A couple of them may be large or small letter variations but they would only be about $24.00 in NM. I would be interested in any that are Philadelphia teams if you are interested in selling.

I will get back to you shortly on the color pins.

    GREAT FIND!!!!!

The color pins are 1932 Orbit Gum pins numbered (PR2) or 1932 Orbit Gum pins unnumbered (PR3). The more common are numbered pins and the better are unnumbered. The numbered values from the same catalog mentioned previously are $22.50 in NM, $11.00 EX, and $7.00 VG. The unnumbered is $45.00 NM, $22.50 EX, and $13.50 in VG.

Once again...GREAT FIND. Wish I could come across something like that just once.

  • I would love to know what the color ones are. Thanks.
  • Wow.Very unusual to find these items at a flea market.I had a hard enough time finding them at the National w/ 400 dealers.Just be careful if you are going to submit them for grading. To be honest it looks like only 2 or 3 are worth spending the grading fee on.If you plan on just having them in a collection that's one thing. If you plan on reselling them you will lose money. The Sweet Caporal Pins I sell on E-Bay every week. They bring a good price in PSA 7 or better.Anything less than that and you would probably be lucky to get your grading fee back unless it is a HOF'er.Too bad the centering is off on a few of them since that seems to be the only issue and they are fairly rare examples. The same goes for the Orbit Pins.Just finding these is tough enough but unfortunately they also need to be in pretty exceptional condition to be worth grading.I sold a PSA 9 Chief Bender Sweet Caporal Pin last week for almost $500.00.Of course it was 1 of only 2 in the world.I have a Fred Clarke Large Letter variation that looks just as nice I am submitting along with other items like Domino Discs Monday.I just picked up a Ty Cobb Domino Disc No D on hat variation.None have ever been graded and this one is nice.

Anyway congratulations on your find.Hopefully your man has more of these. The good thing and the reason I got involved with pins as opposed to cards is that they can't be trimmed.Too many ripoffs w/ raw cards. If you have any questions or would like to see some of my pins my E-Bay seller ID is - Morgan118.I am a Gold Powerseller and have many very high end clients for these.I also have the 3rd finest set in the world.

  • Michael and Bob,
Thanks for all the helpful info on these. I think I overpaid pretty good for these based on guide values you guys gave me. I knew the guy knew what he had so I offered him $12.50 ea. with the hopes that these were at least a $20 bill each based on their age. Lesson learned but I'm OK with it. They look good on the wall right now. There are two of them with sweet caporal pink backs. Are these variations? Thanks again.

    Hi Dave,
Glad I could help....but wish I had better new with the values for you. I don't know of any color variations on the backs but from reading the text for the pins in the catalog, the red backs are more scarce. Also, many times these pins were found without the reverse paper insert so with them would probably add a little value. From the look at the scan, you should probably get the Krause graded and maybe the Leach. If either grades high enough you may able to sell it or them for a decent price lowering the overall price paid for the lot.
    Best of luck,

the above linked message board may give you a lil more info regarding your find.

I know that a few guys there collect these pins.

    Good for you.
  • Wow!!!! Sweet find!!!!

Now how come the flea markets in my area only have crap like 88 Donruss???
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

    What's the address?! image
  • Hi Dave,

The paper color on the backs really add nothing to the value of the Sweet Caporal Pins. They would be part of the grading process however and if they aren't in tip top condition as well as centered they will detract from the grade as well.Even pins which are pristine on the front but have tears on the back paper will recieve a PSA 6 at best.I bought a bunch from a guy on E-Bay that looked fantastic on the front, the backs looked like they had been in a swamp since 1910.Not sure how that can happen but luckily he was good about it and took them back.Of course he never had a scan of the back of the pins in the auction.

As in anything collectible you really have to watch your step with pins as well.Age doesn't always mean they are valuable. It is once again all about condition.I still have some Sweet Caporal pins that were glued into an album. These were bought through SCD and listed in excellent condition as part of a larger buy.Just a note that I don't believe PSA will even grade the Sweet Caporal Pins without the paper being in the back.Good luck as they really are great items to collect.Once again at least you know they're not trimmed. You will never see any in PRO graded holders.Take care

  • That's too bad I can't use any PRO holders. I would have all gem mint 10's. Hey !!!! If the holder says 10 than it's a 10. LOL

Thanks again. Now that I've learned a quick pin collecting lesson. I might have to divulge into something new.
