How Do You Label Your 2X2s?

Hi.

I'm looking for a new way to label my 2X2 coin folders. I've been using a black fine tip sharpie. I don't want to use a label maker (unless it's made for 2X2s), it's can be pretty difficult making the labels fit. I was thinking maybe some sort of rubber stamp.

What do you use? Ink Pen? Label Maker? Rubber Stamp?

Ideas?

I have all kinds of coins, tokens and a few medals. I'm not a big time Stack's Auction collector. I don't collect for investment or value. When I see a coin I think is neat, I grab it. I collect a few coins by year and mint, like Lincoln and Canadian Cents, Westward Journey Nickels, State Quarters, Presidential Dollars and 2 or 3 others. I have some Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets. I've been collecting for 34 years, so I have a little bit of everything.

PS.

Then if I'm going to sell on eBay, I write an inflated price in the bottom right corner so people know what a great deal they are getting.
  • I guess I should of said what type of device do you use to label your 2X2s.

    I use a sharpie.

A stamp would always be the same thing, right?

For ones I have bought, I squeeze in notes on every detail I see with my loupe (near date, high mint mark centered and tilted left, doubled 1 in date, ear doubled lower outside, clash through G, ...) making most look like a heavily graffitied New Jersey overpass. Leroy Van Allen probably laughs at some of the ones I send him.

Not what you were asking about though. I don't sell mine in cardboard 2x2s but safe flips. I label the tags with date-mm, grade, variety and die state. If I want a price on it, I'll affix a round label on the back with the asking price and an encoded cost basis for me.

  • For raw coins in 2 x 2's - front side of holder - I label country and date at the top, grade and price at the bottom. On the back I have other info like bullion weight, cost (in alpha code), and sometimes market retail (also in alpha code).

In this way I know both the cost and market value of the coin. This helps when negotiating with customers.

I use an extra-fine point Sharpie or a 0.7mm gel-tip Black pen. I typically put date/mm on the upper left corner and grade in the upper right of the obverse. On the reverse I put amount paid and date on the lower left and attribution comments on the lower right [if any]. This can be tough to do on Silver dollars

If I am interpreting your question correctly, you are seeking a device, rather than a method, for labeling your 2x2s. There are several devices available to do precisely that, depending upon your preference in holders. If you choose to use cardboard 2x2s, you may either continue to label them by hand using a fine point Sharpie, which allows you to also add many notes on varieties, die states, etc. In the alternative, there are a series of rubber stamps available which allow you to change the date and grade for the coin, much like a date stamp. I have seen these on eBay, but could not readily find one right now to show you.

If you seek an attractive and professional look, you may elect to house your coins in flips, such as the Safe-Flips, and label the 2x2 insert as you choose. You can make your own labels on your computer, using any date, grade, notes and codes that you choose. You can print these out several to a page and simply cut them to the proper size to fit the flip. There are commercially available software packages to do this, as well, which can be found with a little searching on the net.

I put the date and mint mark on the upper left front, unless there is something to note on back....
I make no mention of grade, nor do I put a price on it. If it has a designation like DDR or WIDE AM type 2, I will note that on the upper right side in small print. I'm old fashioned.
If I'm willing to sell it, a guy's gotta be willing to at least offer me face value, or he can go suck an egg image

I never write "go suck an egg on the flip" and I use a ball point pen.
This way, someone also gets my handwriting without having to pay a premium for it.

    That's how label my 2x2's

    Small labels and a pen.
  • I user Saflips not 2x2s. And a sharpie on them to remind myself where they came from.

What do you think, Mr. Bigglesworth?

  • This is the system I've been using since 1989. Only difference is, back then, the labels were on the 2x2's, now, they're on the vinyl page. There's more information on the coins in the summary for each album. The labels are (still) typed with a Selectric typewriter. A "template" is used for each stapler, so that staples are uniform.

WOW! Now that is OCD working overtime!

I'm not dissing you here as I try to achieve the same thing. I find crooked staples very painful to look at but have yet to come up with a method as near perfection as yours! What kind of template?

How I label my 2 x 2's is to print "date-mm variety (if applicable) grade" on sticky back mailing labels and then cut them out with an X-Acto knife. If the label is wide enough it will cover that top staple I screwed up!

For quarters, dimes, nickels and cents, I use 1 1/2 x 1 1/2's to conserve a ton of space. Halves and Dollars still get 2 x 2's.

  • emery labels offers a template on their website to download into word. you can chose the label size you need, to label 2x2 or 2.5x2.5 flips or to put on slabs, and print them out on the computer by the page. works nicely. i've used it to print out the invoice# and line # on individual flips on coins being submitted to pcgs

  • I put the year, mint mark denomination, variety, what I paid for it, what it's currently worth , where I got it, who I got it from, the date aquired, the time of day I bought it, the temperature outside at the time, and how I was feeling that day.
    I write kinda small.
Then on the back, I write a lot of other stuff.
Edited: Oh, I use a big fat black magic marker to do the writing.

  • <<What kind of template?>>

These are the staplers I'm using right now (used on the 2x2's in pics on page one of this thread), compliments of the 99 cents store. The templates are just parts of other 2x2's. There's a stapler for small cents/dimes, nickels/quarters, half dollars, dollars, etc. Ultimately, this saves some time. I just line up the 2x2 being stapled to the one on the stapler. When I'm done, I stick the cheesy looking stapler back in a drawer and out of sight. As far as the 2x2's, I prefer the ones made by Scott-Western (Chino, CA.), for a variety of reasons. I'm going to start using Word (as someone mentioned in an earlier post) to print the Avery labels.

This is one of the reasons I migrated to flips (in addition to wanting to get away from staples forever). With a traditional 2x2, if you want to revise information on the holder, you need to scribble out, use white out, or reholder the coin. Looks crappy.

For flips, I designed an insert slip 1.25x1.25" (30-up on an 8.5x11 page) with the information below and had about 200 sheets printed and cut down.

    Country:________________
    Denomination:___________
    Date/Mintmark:___________
    Grade:__________________
    Catalog #:_______________
    Mintage:________________
    Silver/Gold content:________
    Cost:___________________
    Value:__________________

So if I need to revise a coin's information, I simply fill out a new slip.
  • I don't mark mine with anything. Blank as can be. All the information I need to know is already right there on the coin. No need for redundancy.

Instead of using staples, couldn't you use glue?
Or is glue harmful to the coins?

    Thanks,

I don't use staple holders - AT ALL, FOR ANY REASON.

My collection and my inventory are in archival safe flips purchased from Jake's Marketplace. I write my info on using a sharp pencil, then when I get the time the collection coins' flip inserts are replaced with the 80 per sheet address labels containing die number (which automatically contains the date, mint, and denomination), spread, grade, star rating, price code, date purchased, all in very small lettering.

I use airtite holders that are housed in 2x2 Kraft envelopes.

On the front of the envelope I record date, LM#, V#, rarity, inventory #, obv. die #, obv. grade, EW diameter, NS diameter, weight, die defects (cracks, fills, cuds, etc...).

On the back of the envelope I record my name, date purchased, previous pedigree if significant, rev. die #, rev. grade, S2S relationship, reed count, die defects (cracks, fills, cuds, etc...).

Edit: I'll get a pic in here later tonight to illustrate.
