Pete Rose Basic Set Finally Complete

I know I don't have the best set on the registry, but I'm still proud to say that I have finally completed it. By the time I complete the master set we will all either find out that the plastic PSA uses hurts the cards and this forum will be irrelevant or I'll be dead, so I wanted to at least say I completed one of my registries.
I try to post all my cards pics on both my lists for everyone to see and admire and so I wont forget what I actually bought already.

I know what you mean. Hopefelly my son can complete my Reggie Jackson Master Set for me (he's 3). I pity the people that are working on modern player Master Sets, which have over 1000 cards in them. I know the Barry Bonds Master Set has 1661 cards.
  • Congrats on the set and maybe one day Charlie Hustle will get his deserved induction to Cooperstown.

Congratulations! I always enjoy a registry with scans.
  • I knew I would get all kind words even though it's kind of emberassing how low my 60's grades are. I read a lot of the posts on here daily to see what other people are doing and buying. The newest thing I learned was to keep the scanner top open when you scan your cards to make them look a little clearer when you post them, so obvious when you say it and see it. My only goal for the moment is to take over the #5 Pete Rose spot on the master list.

    Congrats!

I recently took up this set and have decided to do by decades, need 6 more to finsh my run of 80-87 in 9.

I think I may go through my 87 #200 and submit some, I never see them on ebay.

    Congrats again!

  • That's funny you say that about the 1987 #200 because that was the last one I added. I went thru all the lose ones I had and could tell I wouldn't get a high grade on it so I waited until last night when I stumbeld across a PSA 8 about to end. They do show up every once in a while but I agree with you, not as often as most of the other cards. Every time I would think to look there would be a handfull of Tiffany ones but no regular issues. I always thought that was weird.

I have ebay set to autonotify me about new auctions on the rose's, it got to the point where I had to change the search to exclude tiffany cards.

Pretty good that the 87 was the last one you added...I think his rookie is going to be the last one I add image

    Congrats again.
  • Great job! It's such a trip down memory lane cruising through the photos you set up. Thanks for doing that.
  • Congrats on your Basic set completion. I'm still looking for the 63 in the grade I can afford. The Master set is a bear and #1 will never be knocked off. I have a bunch of Rose's in my store that might be able to help you out. PM me if there is anything you need.

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • Red, The only way I was going to get the 1963 Rose was to get it ungraded and hope it was authentic and a good grade. I still probably spent a few hundred on it, but I try to sell some stuff I have laying around the house that I can't think of why I bought it in the first place and just use that money to justify spending a few hundred dollars. After getting the 1963 Rose I joined PSA, the only reason at the time because I was worried that I got ripped off with a copy. Even though it's a PSA 4, it's still my favorite card.
I know being #1 will never happen, unfortunately he's a good guy, so I can't hate him for being on top. I wouldn't even be #6 if it wasn't for his help, so that's why I will be proud just to be #5, at least until I get there and want to be #4.

Would stuff like his 64 Topps Rookie Banquet card, the 67 Stand Up, the 67 Punch out, the 68 Plak be part of a master set, or are test sets that are not released nationally not included in a master set ?

  • You shouldn't tease me like that bishop. That plak card is a card I have never seen before and the #1 guy doesn't have, he somehow has everything else. I have no idea what it's worth but they would be worth putting up on eBay unless you are willing to sell them off eBay.
Arny, I think I could get about $350-$450 for my 1963 PSA 4, a PSA 7 probably about $750, and anything higher, too much. A GAI 9 went for $1,775 last week. I wish I had that kind of cash.

  • I actually have no idea what the plak card is. I just think it's weird that PSA would add it to the list since the #1 guy can't even find it and I have never seen it. Obviously, I haven't been a PSA guru for very long so I'm sure there are a lot of cards I haven't seen. Like the Banquet card and the stand up and punch out, I don't see those on the master list either, so don't let PSA know becasue that will just be another card I'll need that I wont be able to afford. The good thing is if they need to be added to the list, it wont happen happen for another 6 months since I think they are a little back logged on adding cards to lists.
  • Wow! Those are really cool. I can already see myself over paying for that card. Not only would I be fighting with Pete Rose collectors but Clemente, Mays, and Aaron. Since I have never seen one on eBay I can only image how high those would go. Thanks for the picture, I really appreciate it.

A complete basic set of a very popular player and should-be Hall of Famer, especially one anchored by that sweet 1970 PSA 8, is quite an accomplishment.
  • Thanks GDM, The 1970 was one of my latest upgrades, along with my 1965 PSA 7 which I was even more excited to get. I think I got both of them for under $100 so to replace the PSA 3 and PSA 4 I originally had felt pretty good. I think my next big accomplisment is replacing the 1964 PSA 5MC. Every time I look at it, it makes me sick, but that card in a 7 or 8 for some reason are always thru the roof so I may be stuck with it for awhile.

Bob is showing the checklist cards, which I also have, but the hardest Rose Topps item to find ( in my view) is the individual Plak itself; a small plastic bust mold of Rose that was packaged in a wax pack with gum and is listed in the above checklist. Harder to find, in my experience, than the 67 Stand Up, the 67 Punch Out or the 64 Rookie Banquet "card"

  • That Plak checklist is awesome. I have never seen one before. I am sitting on so many cards waiting for submission, those will have to wait. Mr. Korth does have quite a set (so to speak) and probably has quite a few that are not on the list. Now that the new holder has become available I would think another 20 or so cards will be added. I know I'm sitting on at least that.

    Hey Rose collectors...

I have a sweet, WELL CENTERED,

    on Ebay closing 9/12.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • Way ahead of you Carew, I saw it earlier. Not sure if I will bid on it since I have a lot of cards already that I'm planning on draining my paypal account with but I would love to add that card to my collection.

  • Great job in completing your Rose Basic set. Also thank you for the kind words regarding my #1 Pete Rose sets. I really do appreciate your kindness. I have not used the forum in about a year. I happened to type in Pete Rose this afternoon and found this thread. I glad there are so many people who still get excited about Pete Rose and his accomplishments on the field. This week I listed over 50 different Pete Rose PSA 8 cards on eBay to commemorate the 21st Anniversary of his 4192 hit on 9/11/1985. Although 9/11/2001 was a terrible day for all of America there still remains the bright side with what occured on 9/11/1985. If you get a chance please check out my Pete Rose auctions under korthjc on eBay. Most start at $3.00 each and can be an inexpensive way to fill slots in your Rose registry sets. Also if any Rose collectors are looking for particular cards in grades PSA 8 and above please feel free to contact me. I have many duplicates which I would be willing to sell to die hard Rose collectors.
  • Hitking knows that after our offline sale for a lot of the 1986 topps rose set a few weeks ago that there is a pretty good chance that I am going to drain my Paypal account again on his cards on eBay. I don't think I have ever had so many cards in my watch list on ebay. The only problem is keeping my wife from killing me if I win another 20 cards all in one shot. But, if I'm ever going to move up on the registry, it's so much easier getting high grade cards at a great price from Korthjc than to risk getting a PSA 5-7 sending them in myself. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me on Monday or Tuesday Jeff after all your auctions end.

  • Those are some pretty cool cards. Why don't you add them to your registry? I might be the only one, but there are a lot of cards I have still never seen and really enjoy seeing them and realizing that after I see it, I really need to get that to add to my collection.
One thing I still don't understand is why the Ralston Purina cards are not being graded anymore therefore they aren't on the registry. Does PSA have a beef with Purina? Is your Purina card mis-graded becasue it says ceral series?
  • I think it has to do with sheet cut cards. I have a RP in a 10 that I got in a lot I traded for.

    Mike,

Most if not all my scans ARE on the registry! And the Ralston Purina Rose IS included on the Master set registry, but it is called "Topps Cereal Series". Mike, look under" #4 1984 Topps Cereal Series Pete Rose and u will see it on your registry set.

To date, 14 have been graded PSA 10. I do not know if PSA stopped grading them! image

    Very nice.

Carew shares many of these same issues so it's nice to see a run of another player!

  • I just picked up a GAI version of the 63 Rookie in low grade. I can't wait to get it crossed over. One more to go and my basic set will be done as well.
