81 donruss baseball...case break

just splurged on an 81d case...don't ask why image

i've opened a few boxes and thought i share a few pics. i know it's an unpopular set, but if you get the right box you can have some nice looking gems.

overall the boxes are in great condition. one card in each pack is ruined due to gum damage but that is all. if you come across the right box the miscuts are minimal. the edges on some are fuzzy due to dull cutting blades (it appears).

  • Working on the Brewers set from that year so keep me in mind if you have anything grade worthy.

I enjoy the '81 Donruss myself. I have gotten a lot of 10's in the last few years. High percentage compared to other boxes of the early 80's. The Ryan 10 I got sold for good cash. image Sold two different Raines' 10's and got $95 the first time and about $65 the second time (but 6 months later). Fun stuff!

This was my favorite set when I was a kid. Where did you get the case and what did it cost(if you dont mind)?

I liked the idea behind the '81 Donruss set -- give Topps some competition! I ended up with 2-3 hand-collated sets and a box of wax -- purchased a handful of packs at a time. I couldn't afford much while being a married college student.

Here's one of my all-time favorite cards. I remember it was towards the back of the set, about 2 or 3 cards sequentially away from the Raines rookie. The only way it could have been made nicer is if Carew was still in a Twins uni!!

Please post some more pics. You've got some nicely centered cards!

BTW, look how high the pine tar is on Brett's bat! Hmmmm.

Where's Billy when you need him?! That replay of Brett's mad dash to the plate has to be one of the most played of modern times! Classic...

You guys have picked three of the more attractive cards out of the set (Raines, David Mark Winfield and the Brett-Carew double.)

I'm quite fond of the Gary Matthews card, myself and the Rickey Henderson is pretty cool, too.
