New addition to my Mexican collection. Help ID countermark, please.

Just traded this for a 1600 Polish 3 Groschen. I don't know much about countermarks and haven't seen this one before, so any help would be appreciated.

Also, how are countermarked coins graded? Is it the grade of the host, the counter-mark, or both?

Thanks in advance!

looks to be a portugal c/s by the shield - perhaps for brazil issue before the full strike over, or maybe for emergency coinage similar to the King George c/s used in Great Britain?

Yup, Portugal, one of the KM#440 series, 440.15 looks like. The countermarks were applied in 1834.

Dang, you beat me to it.

In case you were wondering, the latest Krause prices it at G: $50, VG: $90, F: $150, VF: $200.

I think it grades at least F, possibly VF for the type.

Brazil was striking 960 reis coins like mad around this time, so I assume the countermarked coins were for use in Portugal proper. Is this correct?

That's where they're listed under. The "denomination" given for them in Krause is 870 reis - that's presumably what the countermarked coins were officially retariffed at.

A good question. If the coin is attributed by its counterstamp (with its own KM number) I would guess the grades refer to the countermark itself, though the small size and often-uneven quality of many of them doesn't lend itself well to grading. I would probably make an attempt to use both the grade of the counterstamp and of the host in describing the piece.

I have a couple of counterstamped coins in PCGS holders, and the grade is based on the host coin, not the c/s.
