Great antique show find -- '62 Post cards!

My wife and I went to a big antique show in Portland this afternoon. I scored some Metropolitan and Metrodome Stadium postcards (see here), a set of Quaker Chewy Granola Bars, Ralston Purinas and a Twins players lot, all for $1.00 each, and one of the biggest scores of my antiquing days -- a 1962 Life magazine with the Post cards in it!

I posted a picture of the Life mag my wife bought me on eBay earlier this year in Stone's "Mail Call" thread. We've searched through hundreds and hundreds of LIfe magazines at other antique stores and shows over the last 2-3 years. She finally paid $86 for that one. Then today I found one and got really excited after spotting the cover. When I finally opened the magazine up, with my wife looking excitedly over my shoulder, the cards sat there in all their glory -- happy to see daylight again after who knows how many years. The best part of the deal was that this magazine only set me back $8.00!! The lady asked if we were Richard Burton or Elizabeth Taylor fans. My wife said "No...." and the lady asked, was there an article we were looking for. My wife said, "Yeah, kind of...". I was still pretty much speechless and excited as heck. We didn't even try to talk her down, for obvious reasons, even though it's almost expected at the end of a long weekend by the dealers. She was really happy to see someone get something they wanted so badly. I walked away looking over my shoulder for the police coming to take me away for theft!

BTW, the magazine and cards we found today were in much nicer condition than the eBay purchase.

BTW: awesome estate find, hoof! i used to have one of those magazines back in the early 90s that my dad got for me.. i think i probably traded it for something stupid like a couple of 89/90 hoops david robinson or something..

Oh, man, a tough call. My nature is to leave things as found, and maybe just send in the cards my wife bought me, but they wouldn't grade nearly as high as the new ones...

Yes, they are the same fronts, but have the advertisement on the back (see scans above)...

I would think if you take the card to Kinko's and use a paper cutter you could get razor sharp corners and edges and get an 8-9 for sure. No ?

well, if youre planning to re-sell or anything, and the card surfaces are nice, i'd do like Zef said and cut 'em out to submit..

I think there are some tiny variations, other than the backs. There was an article about this in an old issue of Krause Publication's mag Baseball Cards that I was looking at recently.

Congrats on the Life Magazine pickup. I always look for that as well, happy to see some bargains are still around.

I would leave the magazines intact. There are a couple people who constantly buy every one of the magazines as they come up on eBay and hack out the cards for grading. There are a considerable number of them graded already with the ads on the back. PSA grades them 2 ways, either perforated straight out of the magazine (which are a lot tougher to get higher grades on) or cut to the black borders, which are very easy to get high grades on. The ones cut to the black borders that came from the magazine should have very little value in my opinion since they are so easy to get in high grade. The perf ones should be a little higher, but neither are worth anything close to the ones from the original cereal boxes which are much more scarce, especially in higher grade.

Everytime I go to a store that has old mags, that's the first thing I look for but not yet.

I will keep looking.

I would want to keep one of them intact with the mag for historical purposes - I guess that's the purist in me.

Thanks! It helps to justify the miles walked and hours spent going through the antique stores with my wife. She buys stuff all over the board. I used to buy knives, moneyclips, this, that, and the other thing, but I've pretty much settled down to looking for just sports stuff again.

Hope I find a postcard of Griffith Stadium soon...

I am definitely taking this advice most to heart. The one we scored this past weekend will be a real conversation piece for us for years to come! The one bought off eBay might be altered in the near future...

Not that I'm aware of. I still have some of the Post cereal cards from when I was a kid. You would'nt believe how lousy I was with a scissors back then!

I'd like to store any and all info regarding the cards along with the magazine. Any help would be appreciated!

I just found a picture of my cereal-box version of The Mick. I'm not sure if we can tell from the scans here if there are any minor differences on the front of the cards...



[edited to add: They look the same to me. I'll have to compare them side-by-side sometime -- especially when I know what to look for...

I tried to post a thumbnail to the full size scans but the code ain't havin' it, so...I'll reduce the scan if it causes problems for anyone.

Nice issue, with pieces on vintage regional sets (including Bell Brand, Kahn's and Glandale) and an interview w/ Eddie Mathews, illustrated with a nice selection of his cards. Also a small piece on '86 regional sets, including the 7-11 Twins Fire Safety set. A nice looking Puckett in that one.

BTW, I just picked up another set of the 1985 Twins 7-11 set this afternoon -- for $1.60 and $2 s/h! The Puckett looks to be well-centered -- a real bugaboo with this set. I emailed the seller and he said they're NM. We'll see...
