It doesn't really look all that steppy to me (and i go through alot of nickels looking for full steps). The picture is not all that great, though.

I'm not a "Jefferson Guy", but it does look FS to me. That being said, the obverse strike is horrid...Mike

As a general rule, the steps on the reverse of 1940 are better defined. The 1939-s is tough with Full steps but I am fairly sure it is much tougher with FS with the reverse of 1938.

  • I can't really tell from that photo. By zooming in as much as I can it looks like a rev of '38 to me...

The obverse strike is too weak to be called FS! And whoever bid this coin up and paid $3200 are not really true coin collectors period! I have a similar coin in an ANACS MS66 in my profile. Because of the strike problem, it only grades MS64 tops. It's unbelieveable seeing someone paying out that much for a MS64 coin! image

    This 1939-S is FS!
Check out the strike, condition and eye appeal on this coin! There's something on the steps but the overall quality is very rare in this example!

Is that a bagmark running diagonally across the left side of the steps on that last Jeff? I didn't think that a Jeff would garner full steps if a bagmark was too deep.

    Robert,

Good eye! But which way would you have it? An understruck coin that shouldn't have been called a FS coin or a fully struck example with a slight flaw in the steps? Look at how the buffalo nickels are collected and sold............oh no.......the secret is out! image

I definitely would rather have a fully struck coin with a bagmark or ticks on the steps versus a crappy struck coin with full steps. Of course if I were to submit either coin I doubt that I would get the FS designation. Just the luck of my life.

    I'm glad I collect non-FS Jeffs.
    When in doubt, don't.
