In a moment of pique, I sold off a coin that I really shouldn't have. This was about 5 years ago, maybe closer to 7. I bought a Central American Republic 8 Reales locally. I don't remember the date. I paid at that time half of Krause UNC, which is what it was represented to me as. I had the dealer send it in to PCGS, and it came back AU58. I was so devastated that I sold the coin at a loss. It bothered me SO much that it didn't make MS60.
In hindsight I wish I had the coin back. Those coins are tough in anything approaching mint state, and had I held onto it I would have no problem doubling my money today.
Ahh, youth... (if you want to call mid-30s youth )
About 20 or so years ago, I had one of Mathew Bolton's 2 pence cartwheels [1797, of course] which was in a custom fit metal case. It was an impaired proof [so I was told by the seller]. Yes, it had a rim ding ot two but no other scratches or other evidence of mis-handling. I think I paid $60 or so for it. It was a lovely chocolate brown in color with sharp edges [except the ding or two] and a full deep strike.
Alas, a couple of years later I was a hundred or so dollars short on the rent, so I had to sell it. While I made a 'profit,' it was actually a 'loss' to me for I've missed it ever since...
I really regret selling a nice big french pewter medal from around 1760 for around $12 in 1996. I really REALLY regret selling what MIGHT have been an early colonial Indian medal on ebay for around the same amount just a few years ago. When I discovered what it might have been, I desperately tried to find the buyer by looking over my last few month's transactions---- not to buy it back, but to inform him of what it might be so i could at least have a hand in seeing if this piece was a "discovery" No luck. Kindofa lesson in not selling something until you really know what it is!
