Auction number 220000324589 . It says 1987 on the flip. What, was OPC sneaking in GU bat cards 20 years ago?

Btw, the centering on that card should almost have a qualifier!
Are you going to bid on it?!

<< <i>That isnt a GU bat piece, it is actually a swatch of Barrys sack that shriveled up and fell off right after the 73 HR season. >>
he was probably feeling a little testy at the time

<< <i>For a fee, Beckett will encapsulate a game used piece of bat or jersey I believe with any card of the player they offer the service on. There was a big stink 2 years ago over them doing it with a Babe Ruth Etopps card as the Etoppers went on a feeding frenzy over it... >>
Wait-- so if you somehow 'ended up' with a Barry Bonds bat chip then Beckett would toss that in to the slab with the card? Is that how this works? And if so, how in the hell would they ever authenticate the chip?
The slab on this card says something like '720' made. Any idea what that might mean? 720 bat chips?
Oh-- and to answer the first question, this isn't a card I'm looking to buy. I just stumbled across it and had zero idea what it was.

From what I recall from the Babe Ruth game used Etopps card, Beckett has certain players, notably Bonds, Ruth, and I think Schmidt, that they have actual game used bats from. For a fee, they will grade your card, encapsulate it with one of their chips from their inventory and in this case, authenticate it as a 'Bonds game used rookie' card.
Looks like this Bonds card was some sort of special they ran--maybe they weren't getting that many requests for slabbed Bonds chips with his cards.
