2 day turnaround but I got spanked!

I would have waited 3 months for a better shake than this.

Needless to say I have no business self submitting and this pile of crap will be my last attempt.

I hope no one else gets grades like these.

  • Yeah don't feel bad--I've gotten hammered on 1971 hockey in the past. Not fun getting 4's when you thought they were 7's.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

I have no idea if I'm right or not, but I'll bet Bob is pretty successful in whatever career he has chosen.

I haven't seen Bob's cards (obviously), so it's hard to tell if he overgraded when he was inspecting them or if he just got jobbed. But it always seems as though the kind of people who are capable honest self-assessment are the one's who rarely end up being failures.

Oh-- and one other thing. I've graded about 150 of these '71 Topps hockey cards, and IMExperience PSA gets a reall prissy attitude about corner wear on '71 hockey, but they're pretty leinent on centering. You really have to scrutinize the corners with a loupe to determine if a card's worth sending in, but if the centering looks even close it's usually worth a shot.

    Boopotts,

Help me out here, what do you mean by "scrutinize the corners with a loupe?" I've heard the term but really don't know exactly what it means. I've been 'shafted' on submissions myself and I think I might need to add this to my evaluations. Thanks pal.

If you don't use a loupe, you're either getting crappy grades or you're very lucky.

A loupe is just a fancy term for a magnifying glass. I use this kind that fits in your eye socket:

    image

I picked up my cheap plastic set of three loupes (2.5X, 5X and 10X) at a dollar store. Best dollar I ever spent.

Like Mike said, it's basically a small magnifying glass. No card nerd is complete without one (think of it as the equivilent of a pocket protector for sports card geeks). You can get on on Ebay for about 8-12 shipped, and you want to make sure you get one that has 10x magnification (but no more then that, since anything with more power then 10x will just complicate the issue when you're examining your cards) and DEFINITELY get one that's lighted (I see that Mike's isn't lighted, but he must have eyesight that would put Chuck Yeager to shame. My eyes are a little on the lousy side, so the small light is a Godsend). Also, be prepared to buy a new one every month or so, because if you're like me you'll leave it on all night within the first two weeks that you own it and will completely dismantle and ruin it when you try to replace the battery.

Thanks Boo for the kind words.

Rvc this was my first (and last) large 71 submission.

I've had plenty of cards graded over the last 18 months. Usually one or two submissions a month up until 2 months ago. I've graded plenty of 71's too.

I picked up a bunch of nice 71's a few months back and went through them all. First I pulled all the 50/50 cards. Then I removed anything with fuzzy corners, toning, print dots or miscut backs. I narrowed the stack and put them on the shelf for 6 or 7 weeks. Last week I had some time so I went through them again and weeded out a few more cards. I have handled a ton of 71's (see my registry set) and thought I pretty much knew what it would take to pull 8's and up. I even cracked a couple 7's I felt were undergraded and added them to the sub. The cracked 7's (Boudrias) both came back 6's by the way.

I thought I learned a lot over the last 18 months but I was mistaken. Of everything I did learn on these boards I neglected the best advice given. Buy a loupe.

I have a sweet 66 set I wanted to grade but I'll be keeping it raw for the foreseeable future.

Live and learn. Thanks again guys, Bob C.

One of the newer developments at PSA is that they're really cracking down on white bordered cards that show any paper loss under 10x magniifcation--even if the corners are genuinely mint to the naked eye. That may be what happened here, Bob, since I have plenty of PSA 7 slabs in my 'bin of shame' that look absolutely stunning to the naked eye, but show some mild corner wear when I break out the loupe.

Anyway, you'll be in for a chuckle or two when I get back my 1974 OPC hockey-- all of which are rough cut, and none of which I louped (don't ask). Those should be good for a group belly laugh when they finally pop!

Same thing just happened to me. I cracked some PSA 9 (oc) 1971 Glossies and re-submitted under "No Qualifiers" and they were bumped down to PSA 6. Makes no sense to me at all.

    phreakydancin; Boopotts,

Thanks, I guess I need to pick one of those up! I've been using an 'Inspector Clouseau' magnifying glass. It helps, but I know that would work out better!! Appreciate the help.

I thought everyone used a magnifer to submit cards. Seems kinda costly not to. The one I use is a 10X lighted magnifier and it cost me about $35. I think you can find them on Ebay. I've thought about trying to buy them wholesale someday and reselling them just because I know so many people on here could use one. Here's a picture of mine:

LOL, it's actually only about 6 inches long. I haven't figured out how to make smaller pictures yet with my digital camera. It's the best magnifier I've ever used and I wouldn't go back to a non lighted one.
