WTF - who knew that these things had this type of following?

I know it's off topic, but I couldn't believe this on the non-sport board...

Do you ever wonder how you would choose your words if you had to explain this to a starving kid from Paraguay?

I'd settle for how the outside of the case became so disgusting. Did the flower "pollinate?"
  • yep for my fifty G's i want the thing wiped off on the dude's t-shirt at the very least.

Boo- That is some of the funnist sh*t I've heard all month. Reminds me of the South Park where they sent away for a starving kid from Africa and Cartman is explaining that appetizers are what you eat before dinner to make you hungrier.

There was an episode on Everyone Loves Raymond about a game card that his daughter gave away and was worth some coin.

He wound up buying another for her from a shop (the actor was Pee Wee Herman) that charged him a healthy price - since it was "Pristine."

He handed her the card - she looked at it and summarily FOLDED IT, shoved it in her pocket and walked up the stairs.

He should have gotten the Anti-Hero of the Month Award!

Sure you would. But then, you're not a starving kid from Paraguay.

I don't mean to pick on this guy, or on whomever might actually buy this card, since it could be argued that any 5 digit purchase of a sports card is, in a way, just as irresponsible. But even for someone who's well versed in the perversities surrounding the market for collectibles in the US this seems a little excessive.
  • well.. if he sells it i'll be amazed

It's kind of like the 2001 BGS 10 Bowman Chrome Pujols. He won't get that asking price ( I hope), but these 'Black Lotus' cards sell for around $700 or so in PSA 7, so he'll probably sell this for some eye popping figure that will leave all of us here wondering why we weren't buying boxes of Magic instead of Stadium Club 13 years ago.

MTG stuff has a pretty dedicated following. I played it back in the 90s. I figured it'd die out in a few years, so I sold off all my good stuff and raked in about $800 in 2001. Well, that stuff I sold 5 years ago would sell instantly for a BIN of $3,000 now. Aragh!

  • Hey guys,

The seller has a LOT of really nice MtG cards. I don't think he's really concerned about selling it; more likely he's looking to see interest and use it as advertising (the card is featured prominently on his webpage). The last couple of PSA 10 Beta Black Lotuses (Loti?) sold for around $6000 each. I would guess there might be a buyer at $10-15K, but not 50K. Besides, you never know who might come along... image

I can safely say it won't be me, however image

My stepson is into these things (yu-gi-oh instead) and what I find amazing (and refreshing) about this phenomenon is that condition is of no value! The true value in the cards are in how they are played tactically and in whether you like them or not. It is a game. A card graded 10 should not be worth anymore than one graded 1 since most who are playing this game do not care how the card looks but what is actually on the card. Refreshing, isn't it?
  • I still kick myself over the first MTG cards that came out in 1994. I was offered at a show 4 boxes of Alpha and 3 boxes of Arabian Knights for a total of 225 dollars and I did not take it. Now the boxes of Alpha alone can bring 15,000 each and the Arabian Knights can bring about 15 to 20K each.

The thing about the Alpha cards is nearly every card in the set sell for 3 to 5.00 and can got up to 2000.00 for a ungraded Black Lotus. With Arabian Knights there were 40 packs in a box and nearly every pack has a 100.00 card in it. There are an average of 3 Juzam Djinn and 3 Library of Alexandria's in every box. With an estimated 2500 sets of Alpha and Arabian Knights made and most cards from the sets being highly playable finding mint cards are very rare.

I have been considering getting some of my more modern cards graded just to have, but I hate to do that since they are no longer playable once graded.

Wow, this makes the 2001 Bowman Chrome Pujols in 2002 look like a bad deal!!!!!!
  • what !!? Time to look thru my kids binders !! They probally have a few cards that might need to get moved into individual holders. I never knew they were that valuable. All I can say is wow. $15K for a box !! crazy.

i have a 3200ct box full of these cards somewhere.. i dont know what series they are or anything, i just know theyre Magic:The Gathering..

  • I recall a story last year about a Magic ungraded card selling for 25K on ebay. If I'm not mistaken, the winner of the big tournament got the card and it was one of only two out there...makes me wonder if I'm in the wrong line of work.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
