So, did they (ANACS) or did they not receive them? I'm confused.
  • ANACS signs for them and they dont have them...... image
  • The Post Office records show the coins were delivered and signed for. ANACS can't find the coins or any record of them.. I see it as ANACS lost them.

Any word on ANACS helping you finding them / reimbursing you?

How do you register and insure for $60,000???

I thought the limit was much less!

Sounds ike ANACS' problem not your's, unless someone forged the signature (which I've had happen on registered packages)

Good luck getting it squared away!

    from the USPS website...

Items you send with Registered Mail are placed under tight security from the point of mailing to the point of delivery, and insured up to $25,000 against loss or damage. And you can verify the date and time of delivery and the delivery attempts online.

how did you insure for 60K?

    and hey........
    image
  • I've seen that 25K limit on their web site, but that's apparently out of date. We send packages a couple times a month over 25K and they accept them at the P.O. here in Utah.
  • I sent a pckage insured for $28K to PCGS via registered mail. $25,000 with the post office and the remainder covered by Hugh Woods. 25K is also the limit stated on the front of the white registered slip. It's a moot point now though if the P.O. says they were signed for. Does the person whose signature is on the acknowledgement of acceptance even work at ANACS? This is definitely a drag.

    who signed for them?

what does it say online when you enter the number?

Of course the P.O.'s record shows they were delievered ... the P.O. doesn't want to be on the hook for 60K. Of course I am being pesimistic (sp) but it would certainly obsolve them from any liability. Where do you go from here? Who becomes responsible if you cannot yourself prove they were actually delivered "aka" the coins exchanged hands from the P.O. to ANACS? At this point it sounds like it could become a his word against anothers word kind of thing?

If you send it in 3 separate packages you could insure for $75,000 or $25,000 each.

Have ANAcs contact their insurance company and file a claim.
Save all paperwork, get proof of value.

If it can be proven that ANACS signed for the package and ANACS cannot locate the coins, then ANACS is liable for the loss.

  • How would one ID these coins if they were cracked out, I know on most Burg reports I've taken over the years If it involves graded coins I ask for the serial number on the holder and if they're raw I just list type year and denomination.
Please remember I just got back into collecting so I'm not up on whats rare and whats not, info I find here that is useful I pass on to the Detectives and Patrol folks at workand I already faxed a copy of this list to them----Tom

Terrible situation for this Bustie collector. Losing 80 Bust Halves worth at least $60,000 like that is unbelievable.image

We need to get the ANACS ID numbers if we are going to help this poor fellow.

What have you been doing the past four months to take care of this? What will Anacs do on their part, the coins were in thier hands last? Next time you should get a $300.00 plane ticket and take them in yourself. Good Luck Flyfishguy image

thats what I was thinking so some ser#'s would help but If they were taken they might be cracked out to avoid ID, if not #'s could be a dead bang ID.

I expect the declared value was $60K and insured for $25K and the extra security fee was paid. Looks like ANACS has some splainin to do. Probly an enterprising employee decided to take advantage of the confusion during the move?

I wonder if the postal people who delivered actually got some form of ID from the person who signed for it.

I must say, the past few times I sent expensive coins across the country, I get quite nervous. My latest one (it's been 2 weeks now), though not that expensive, a registered package, is still in limbo somewhere.
  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
You can send Registered mail up to $100K, however the USPS will only insure up to $25K. The remainder must be insured by an outside service. Many coin dealers have such coverage which requires sending Registered and using their own insurance for the entire value of the shipment.
  • BAJJERFANBAJJERFAN Posts: 31,076 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you have not already done so your first move should be to file a claim with the postal service. They will investigate and if delivery was made they will provide you with the necessary proof that it was delivered and signed for. Your net step will be to seek compensation from ANACS.

  • I may be wrong here, but couldn't the postal inspector track down who signed for the package and then press charges for using the postal service to commit theft? If I am wrong I am sorry I think I have heard of such a thing when people send money orders through the mail and they charged the person who received and cashed the money order and didnt send the product to the person buying from them

  • $25K is the limit with the USPS. However, if ANACS signed for them, then they are responsible for the actual stated value on the ANACS submission form. The post office is off of the hook since someone signed for it. If the post office had lost the package, then you would have been out $35,000, since it was over insured.

Hopefully the coins will be found and eventually returned, and if stolen the theif brought to justice. I had four early bust halves stolen in route from the Reiver sale Reiver stolen coins. The R.7 rarity was recovered by a dealer visiting a coin shop, who returned the coin to Heritage. I had signed a release for the stolen coins and Heritage refunded the money, so the coin is legally the property of Heritage. Before I signed the release, Heritage had stated the coins would be offered to me if recovered, but I would expect the coins to be held for insurance and possible criminal litigation for some time.

Not sure if ANACS would be responsible even if they signed for the box.....here is my thinking...

I send a box registered with a couple of coins.....ANACS receives them ...but I claim that there were 50 coins in the shipment....

ANACS signed for the box, but as I have illustrated, there must be some sort of right that ANACS has to receive them in...

I would assume certain companies "video" boxes being opened.... same as the bank "films" the employees who open the envelopes that have been deposited in the ATMS.... so that they know if money is correct..

  • Well a year ago, I had gotten a non-coin item via Ebay.
The seller sent it out insured return receipt signature required.
After three weeks I checked as to what happened as I hadn't recieved it yet.
The seller ran a request thru the USPO about it and the USPO stated it had been deleivered and signed for, but not by me.
So three months later, after all the negative things going back and forth about it, guess what shows up in my mailbox?
Yup it arrived. The package looked perfect, never having been damaged or anything.
I asked the mailman about it, since it was postmarked over three months earlier, and he just shrugged his shoulders, and stated, "Beats me, I don't know."

The PO will happily charge you for insurance amounts over the 25K limit. But if they lose the package and you file a claim 25K per package is the maximum amount they will pay. The "insurance" fee you pay for the amount over the 25K max goes for "security handling" not insurance.

You are absolutely correct, Condor 101.

The post office will happily accept your additional money for what you think is "insurance" over $25,000. They will not pay 1c over $25,000 in the event of a claim. Incredible, but true.

"security handling fee" = 100% profit to the Post Office.
