let's say you found a valuable watch

on a beach. Solid gold and jeweled. It has a serial number on it and you know also it was marketed by American Express because it has their logo on it. The strap is solid gold as well. Should you try to find the original owner and return it or see if he/she is offering a reward or just try to sell it. Selling it could lead to problems as well if the original owner reported it stolen rather than lost. One jeweler offered $5G's, it must be worth more, how could you maximize the sale?

  • I would personally try to find the owner if possible. I'm like you thinking that maybe someone reported that watch was stolen and now it is on Ebay even though you found it and that can bring some unpleasant ordeal. It is an expensive piece.

Yep, found it fair and square in a thunderstom on a beach in southern Maine. Had it now about 10 years I think

  • That must be some watch that a jeweler would offer $5Gs. I would give some effort to find the original owner. If I had not found the owner after an honest effort to do so, I would try a couple more jewelers and sell it to the highest bidder. I would be very cautious trying to sell something like that on ebay.

Let me also state that it wasn't me that found it.

My two cents: instead, locate the owner and return it.

On the other hand, if you've had it for 10 years, it's definitely yours.
I'd try to sell it to a watch collector on the web.

No, I didn't find it myself, my kid did and I tried very hard to persuede him to try and find the owner. It would have been easy, but he wanted to keep it. He was on his own by this time, over 21 and there was nothing I could do but keep pressing him to try finding the rightful owner. He has never done anything with it, worn it once that I remember now he is getting married he is looking for extra cash.
