We Have Our Passion....Collecting...

What's your wife/girlfriend or husband/boyfriend's passion?

My wife is the Imelda Marcos of Blanco Bluff!!!

I have 2 pairs of shoes! One for work and one for church. And one pair of running shoes on active duty. That's it.

My wife's side? Actively displayed? About 60 pairs!!! And a close second? Costume jewelry!

Running marathons. Which is weird, since as I've alluded to before I'm not exactly svelte. So I stand to the side and root her on.

Incidentally, she did strong arm me into running 1/2 of the Flying Pig marathon with her in 2002. The pictures of me after running 13 miles are absolutely priceless.

Stampin' Up and scrapbooking are her hobbies. In fact, she's in the basement doing that stuff now, giving me an early start at being gay with my cards.

  • My wife enjoys our horses. I can't blame her at all though. We board our horses and I have enjoyed spending time at the barn (even if I am only cleaning stalls!). It is a very quiet and relaxing pace, far different from work, etc.

Boopotts - I live in Northern Kentucky and have been to the Flying Pig supporting a friend. I will stick to the sidelines chearing - I don't think that you will never see me run a marathon!

my wife lamps w/ the kids and enjoys some scrapbooking. the have all night lock ins for that -ish, i heard 1 60 year old lady passed out after scrapbooking for 2 days straight w/o food or water?

she also enjoys doing nothing in particular, especially when i am about to start a good sporting event, which in turn usually leads me to constructively suggesting 1 of the aforementioned passions in the 1st line.

Stone - image my wife is a shoe nut as well, although she recently cut back to about 50 pairs.

Got you beat by a pair though ... I got running shoes, golf shoes, and a pair of birks for everything else.

  • I believe scrapbooking is artsy-fartsy stuff with photographs and rubber-ink stamps, etc. Just a guess.

Oh yeah, my wife enjoys investing as much of our income as possible into our various retirement accounts. She is currently at 25% percent of her annual income, while I'm putting away a paltry 20%.

She is completely befuddled when I sell a card for over four figures.

    Really?

It's my nerd hobbie as I call it. I've been doing it for about 4 years when I started a baby book for #2. Look HERE to see some of my stuff for example. We have a message board too where we get exited about patterned paper.

For my wife, it was definitely shoes.

A friend and his wife were helping me move my wife’s things from her apartment to my house. My friend’s wife looked into the back of the Ryder truck at literally about 50 shoeboxes and said, “What’s in all of those shoeboxes?”

    My reply: “Shoes.”

These days her time is consumed with our daughter, MOPS and playgroups. She has settled to less than ten pairs of shoes. I still have three.

Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

Mike, my wife is the same with shoes and is called the same thing at her work because they see her in a different pair all the time..

Other than shoes she collects the odd antique egg cup if she likes it.. something for her to do while I'm looking for cards at antique shows..

Edit forgot to add she scrapbooks.. costs more than my cards I believe.

  • Another thing, the better half loves signed and numbered Chagalls, Picassos, Dalis, etc.

Very frugal, but splurges on finer investments.

Believes sportscards are an "exotic" investment!
  • Knuckles, please tell us more about the egg things . . .

I forgot about this. I SOOOO wish my wife would ease up on the signed Picassos. It's not the 2 million a pop that I mind, but I hate having all those eyes staring at me from up on the wall when I'm thumbing through our original print run of Gibbons!
  • Not original Picassos, my friend! Signed prints . . . a bit easier on the pocketbook than originals.

My wife does scrapebooking. Let's just say at the end of the year when I print out the Quicken report the dollar amount on the baseball card line is a wee bit higher than the dollar amount on the scrapebooking side! image She also is the founder of a developing non-profit, children's museum, here in Sacramento. That is keeping her VERY busy and I am, of course, very proud of her. She has been on the news, in the paper, meets with lots of politcians and connected people, etc....

Boy I didnt realize how popular scrapbooking is. My wife is big into that too. We have a "hobby room" in our house with a huge desk for her scapbooking stuff, shelves for scrap book supplies, you name it. But I do get a corner in the room for my piano and a locking closet for my cards. So I get about 40 square ft. for my stuff, she gets about 140 square ft. But it keeps her happy and busy while Im on here or checking out some cards.

Wife just came home and I asked her - she knew exactly what I was talking about!

She said it was BIG business. She was thinking of jumping in also.

Then again, scrapbooks have been around since...there has been scrap? That's how you get all those Allen & Ginters with the backs destroyed.

Some of my friends put their cards in scrap books - with good ole school room paste! I once ate some?!

My favorite tho - in the days of mimeo's - smelling the paper! image

    Thanx for sharing guys

My wife loves to read. She reads while brushing her teeth, while eating dinner, while watching TV, etc. I think one time she actually read a book while we were having sex--it was one of those toddler books with 6 pages, 3-4 words to a page......apparently she almost finished because she asked for a book mark when we were done. Ah well, at least I was in there pitchin' eh fellas. image

I guess I am one of the lucky guys. My wife likes to scrap book like alot of your wives, but my wife also likes to collect cards! image

She has her own collection of Brett Favre/Packers items as well as Bobby Clarke/Flyers cards. She has jerseys and figures and all kinds of cool stuff. And she can hold her own in a conversation about football or hockey.

And to top it all off, she is NOT into shoes or shopping. Go in, get what we need, go home. Gotta love it! image

My girlfriend is absolutely not a collector and can't understand the whole idea. About 15 years ago she lost all her stuff in an apartment fire so she hasn't felt the need to accumulate lots of stuff.

Her hobbies are gardening, cooking, and working out at the gym. And she loves to go to spas and get manicures/pedicures.

Thankfully she doesn't scrapbook my bodily functions.

My wife is in the habit of watching these home improvement shows (clean sweep/trading spaces/in a fix/some - something on a dime show........) and keeps me busy on weekends trying to 'compete' with the ideas she sees. I do my best to persuade her 'we don't need to do all this B.S.' It works most of the time, but sometimes for peace in the house she gets one over on me.

My fiance is into scrapbooking big time. She has all kinds of machines and die cuts and all sorts of other crapola for it. I dont mind cuz it keeps her busy while I spend hours on ebay and watching games, but the part that gets to me is how she keeps it all. I have my cards relatively organized, but once she starts a new project forget it, she will literally spread paper and other stuff over a 20x15 room till you cant see the floor or furniture. I just bite my tongue and deal with it, something I have been taught well by my already married friends.

The one thing I have going for me with cards is no matter how much I buy, no matter how obsessive I get, no matter how much I talk about it she is completely ok with it all. Her father was into cards, and used to drag her and the rest of the family to shows when they were kids. The money I spend on cards is relatively nothing compared to the 20k a show her father would spend picking up 52 Mantles.

Mine's into hand weaving and fiber arts. Perfect for her as she can't just sit still - has to always be doing something with her hands.

She takes the raw sheep fleece, washes it, cards it, spins it into yarn and makes things. She's darn good at it too.

    A new event! "Crapbooking!". image

Funny stuff in this thread. My wife buys all kinds of '50s-vintage ceramic pieces, little metal baby crappers, etc. She's paid more in shipping/handling over the last three years on eBay than I have on cards!

  • I do not know if it is a collecting passion, but my girlfriend buys shoes, shoes, and more shoes. She has more shoes by her front door, than I think I have ever owned in total. She would say to me, "look at my new shoes," I would be like, "they look like those other ones," and she would say, "but no, these were on sale!" I do not get it, will never get it, but it is good to know that we do not have joint credit cards, at least yet!!!!!!!!!!!
