What's going on in this 1972 Topps photo?

I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on in this photo (1972 Topps #176). At first glance, it appears to be a garden variety play at the plate, but... how in the world does the bat get into the picture??? It's bugging me. I'd love to hear some ideas.

    Play at the plate and somebody else ( in the foreground) picked up the bat to get it out of the way. IMO

    Or maybe the bat flew up as he slide into home cause someone didn't get a chance to pick it up?

    GUy was going for an inside the park homerun and never dropped the bat, he planned on using it as a weapon.

    Maybe he was stealing home and the batter dropped it as he was getting out of the way ?

    Brushback that turned into a passed ball, men on base (hence the catcher's mask off and he's preparing to throw to third).
    Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

    Man on first, batter hits a ball in the gap and flings the bat down the third base line. Third-base coach picks up bat, puts up "Stop!" sign at runner rounding third. Runner continues running and coach gets rid of the bat...

    The relay man must have bobbled the ball because the guy still made it home: thus the name of the photo -- "Safe at home!!!".

    I like best the explanation that there is someone just out of the frame actually holding the bat. I hadn't thought of that. Maybe a runner who has scored just beforehand and has cleared the way for the next guy (a la J.T. Snow getting Dusty Baker's kid out of the way).

    Thanks to all for the input. I'll sleep a little easier tonight.

    Clemens was pitching and threw the bat home instead of the ball.

    I think the guy on the ground actually has the bat stuck in his butt. Of course he is still crawling to the plate so the catcher is yelling for the 3rd baseman to throw him the ball so he can tag the poor dude out. Gotta say that guy with the bat in his butt has a lot of heart!
