What's going on in this 1972 Topps photo?

I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on in this photo (1972 Topps #176). At first glance, it appears to be a garden variety play at the plate, but... how in the world does the bat get into the picture??? It's bugging me. I'd love to hear some ideas.

The relay man must have bobbled the ball because the guy still made it home: thus the name of the photo -- "Safe at home!!!".
I like best the explanation that there is someone just out of the frame actually holding the bat. I hadn't thought of that. Maybe a runner who has scored just beforehand and has cleared the way for the next guy (a la J.T. Snow getting Dusty Baker's kid out of the way).
