I wish I could have gone.

How does Karl Stephens' inventory look? I think I'll take my daughter there on Saturday. I won't have a whole lot of time to look, but she can do the kids' treasure hunt and I can look for Dansco Japanese and British type set albums.

I really need to get the gold Hello Kitty coins. Maybe some of the Japanese HK mint sets too...

Very few mint state Japanese coins, mostly a couple of common dragon yens, but a few pleasing circulated coins in there. Loads and loads of British in the boxes which I barely glanced towards. Steve Harvey had some high quality British.

Here's another one from the show:

    image

I really like the pre war Japanese coins, such clean and attractive designs with enough of an exotic hook to pull me in. This one is a 1901 (Mmeiji 34) sen. The coin is a nice and original with just a touch of brown. Looks like a 64+ to me and oh so close, but not quite, red.

    And the next:

    image

This coin has been a frustrating one for me. I need* a Ferdinand I thaler for my Holy Roman Emperor set but for a fairly common monarch he proved quite elusive. This one was actually from before Ferdinand's promotion to Emperor upon the death of his brother Charles V. You can tell by the single headed eagle rather than double and from the legends calling him Roman King (= heir apparent) rather than Roman Emperor. While an emperor one would have been a bit better I finally threw in the towel after two years of being humiliated in auctions, being offered polished POS coins for stupid money or fairly nice ones for way, way too much. Welcome Ferdinand! Should ht4 thaler of my dreams someday arrive you'll be dumped unceremoniously but until then welcome!

For some reason I really like one of his titles "Infanta Hispania." So much so that it bother's my wife when I wander about the house singing "Infanta Hispania" over and over. Try it - it can be very musical!

*Another wifeism is when I tell her I need a coin. Yeah, you really "need" that. image

    image

How so? Any reasonable person could be annoyed by the "Infanta Hispana" song or point out that a Ferdinand I thaler is not exactly up there with food & shelter.
  • Good save!

Btw, Infanta Hispana song would be much less annoying if it had more body to it. Saying Infanta Hispana over and over again does not a song make.

Not saying, singing. That makes a song!

And one I originally bought from Karl Stephens' price list sight unseen to flip, but...

    image

...it's just too nice to let go! I've bought and sold several small Napoleon III silver coins and liked the designs. In the back of my mind there was the little voice saying "gotta get one some day" - that day is today! Light sea green and champagne toning, blazing luster and lovely clean surfaces, what more could you want?

  • JamminJJamminJ Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭
And another Japanese coin, this one a yen:

    image

This is my third dragon yen, I added this one as it has a little color rather than the usual blast white. A bit of russet with an abreviated rainbow near the rims. It also benfits from being less baggy than average on the reverse. I'd still like to add one in very high grade and actually saw a couple of slabbed 67s at the show. Unfortunately they were offered by the local Persian rug dealer (no joke) who has prices so high I've never seen him sell a coin ($2600 for a common date yen).

  • RickeRicke Posts: 677
wow... that is a beautiful yen.

Let's see, I like French coins and I like some Asian coins. If only there were a way to bring the two together...

    image

That's right, French Indo China! I pick these up from time to tome as I like the designs and they have the whole in-law connection thing goin on. Kind of a dull design but the square hole is neat and the coin is wonderful. Bright, blazing red with just a few carbon spots. Much like the Japan stuff my small hoard is slowly taking on type set dimensions.

Well, the photo came out a bit odd on this one but what the hey.

    image

Really its a glossy brown in hand with som ered in the protected areas. A flange flaw in front of the portrait is a bit unfortunate but otherwise rather nice. Well struck and clean, much better than average for the type, it replaces an unc corroded one in my collection.

And the last coin of the show...

    image

I wanted one of these for a while as the beard on the Duke is very cool. This one has been sitting in a dealer's inventory for many years, always overpriced in my opinion. However, I never did come across another one in all that time so it started to look a bit more reasonable about a year ago. Today, I finally took the plunge! Several people thought it looked too dark but I actually like the toning, a mottled russet grey throughout with nice underlying luster. However, I'm not that fond of the big spot on the reverse and am considering giving NCS a shot at it.

    That's it for this show!

Looks like you had alot of fun!

I have to come down on LamminL's side with the whole saying/singing thing. There's a world of difference between the two and the Y chromosome seems a bit oblivious to it at times imageimageimage.

On the other hand, she and my husband seem to see eye-to-eye on the want vs need issues.

I've been leaning more towards the pure Austrian lately. However, here's one for my type set from the January show:
