Well, PayPal just restricted my account.

I guess it was my turn. Probably triggered by the volume I did this month. Restricted eMail received at 2:44 PM. Logged in and provided the additional information. Account back to regular status 10 minutes later.

They wanted my social security number and the address that is in my credit bureau files. Since the address is the same as the one they already had, that was just clicking a link. The only new info was my SS number. The "review" must be an automated pull of the file, since it was done so quickly.

    Here's the eMail they sent:

    Dear Russ Stringham,

As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal system. We recently noticed the following issue on your account:

PayPal occasionally performs credit checks on selected account holders. Your account has been selected to go through this process. We must complete a credit review in order for the warning on your account to be lifted. In most cases, the account holder's personal credit is analyzed using a Social Security number and an address likely to generate a match with a credit bureau. Please log into your PayPal account to provide this information. If an examination of your business credit would be more appropriate, please contact our customer service department to supply your Tax ID number.

In order to secure your account, we would like further information from you. We appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure account safety.

Please log in to your PayPal account to respond to this request. Be sure to log in securely by opening a new browser window and typing the PayPal URL. Once you log in, you will be asked to provide information to secure your account.

If we do not receive a response, we may have to limit access to your account. Limited access protects your account until additional security measures can be completed.

We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Please understand that this is a security measure intended to help protect you and your account. We apologize for any inconvenience.

    Sincerely,

Recently, I had to change my password............again for the second time in the last 3-4 weeks. They said that someone was trying to compromise my account! image That someone was ME! I mistakenly, out of habit, had entered my old password and they immediately sent me a TKO notice! image

At least it was a polite and well worded email to you, and notably without a link but instructions to log in by typing in the paypal url in a new browser. Alot more professional and acceptable than a random phone call.

I got a phone call from them also - last week. But, that was to verify that another seller account I have is really me.

  • Funny... my SS card says "Not to be used for identification", but there is apparently no law that says private companies have to abide by this. If you don't like the company's policy, your option is to not do business with them. Of course as has been discussed in other threads, there really isn't any alternative to the PayPal-Eborg collective.

The problem is that the SSN has become widely used as both an identifier and an authenticator. This is a very bad thing. It's like using the same word as both your email address and your password.

It is supposed to be a secret number that only you would know, yet it is plastered all over the place. Many colleges post them publicly in grade reports. Last week I wrote down my SSN three times for a temp agency that I don't know, to apply for work if and when it becomes available. I didn't have to - the alternative I guess would be to not apply for work with them. But if you start refusing every agency that does that, it sort of cuts down your job options.

You did not really give them your real social security number, did you? I would never give, and have never given, my ssn to anyone that was not for social security purposes. i.e. paying SS tax, collecting SS benefits, etc.

They can ask all they want, but they never get it from me. Funny, after I refuse to give it to them, everyone completes any transaction that the SSN was intially required.

Too many ID hijackings for me..

An important difference here is that Russ could log into his account securely and give the information. He wasn't called and asked for the info over the phone. If eBay offered the updated info to be entered online, we probably wouldn't be hearing all the complaints.

Banks have to have your SSN for paying SS taxes. Credit cards don't get my SSN, they don't need it, they may want it, but they don't get it from me. Yes, I do have a couple of credit cards.
