Proof Silver Eagles----Investment ?

I know not all collectors collect coins solely for the profit potential, but for those that do, what is your perception for the short, medium and long term profit potential for these coins that are made by the millions for collectors and not for circulation. Are these US Mint coins filling the void, or the equivalent, of Franklin Mint collectibles ?

Long term, they will be blown away by the return of Vanguard's Prime Money Market fund.

Personally, I wouldn't invest in them. For me, an intangible has to benefit people somehow: real estate, REITS, oil stocks, etc.. Proof silver eagles don't fit that profile for me.

Thats my take on it anyway

The only one that could appreciate would be the 1995-W (and that's so inflated I think it will probably go down in price eventually).

The last several years have got flat, however they are still at issue price. Consider this though, all 21 of the Proof ASE trade at or above issue price, with most of them well above issue price...you can't say that about the US Mint's Proof/Mint Set or Commemorative programs.

It is a fun set to put together. I buy my one from the mint every year. I don't think there is any major upswing, and I think the 1995-W is the only coin with potential, and that one could be topped out for the short haul (but who knows that thing has always gone up Up UP!)

here's my little shot at it..........I bought 10 (just an example) 2003 SAEs and I made $70 selling them on ebay. Now if you look at it in percentage, I guess it isn't TOO bad, 28% for a few years.

The Proof Silver Eagles are a collector issue coin, and I personally love them. I think they are gorgeous in proof... as for value in the long term... I think they are an item that will mostly hold their value... some will go up, some will go down, some will do both over the years... but overall, I believe they should hold their value, barring some major economic or hobby catastrophe...

Put simply, NO. They are not rare, except for one over priced issue.

Coins are not really an investment as they can not be sold quickly

without taking a loss. If one buys quality coins and holds them for 5-10

years, then one should do alright. However, never put the rent money into coins,

Its only a hobby unless you are a professional who makes a living buying and selling.

So you made what about 6% a year. Not too bad I guess, but not fantastic.

Raw unc silver eagles would have done better, true.
