New Peace VAM Discovery? Collared Eagle

A friend asked me to look at his Peace dollars and I found this very interested die break around the eagle's neck on a 1925. Is this a known VAM or a new discovery? I've nicknamed it "Collared Eagle" instead of broken neck.

Looks like after-Mint damage, like Islamic extremists were making an ogrish video clip with that eagle.

  • How would they get the metal to be in relief instead of incused?

It looks like there are digs around it and a tool scratch diagonal below it. Dug out metal is dispaced somewhere right by the gouge in the coin. It looks like this is on the coin and not on the die. Do you see something that would suggest otherwise? I can only go on that image.

Looks like a lamination to me. Could be that the "peeled" surface of the lamination has lifted enough to appear to be in relief.

  • It's very interesting looking. I'd send it to Leroy for a review. he'll tell you exactly what it is..... good luck.
  • Probably after mint damage. I knew this looked to cool to be real. The coin also happens to have the initials "EH" carved on the obverse. But probably not Islamic extremists. This is been in a safe deposit box since the late sixties until yesterday.

Perhaps a gouge filled in with melted silver?

That's a good guess too. I was thinking for a few seconds that maybe there was a pin mount there, but the orientation would be funky.

Looks like damage IMO. Hope I'm wrong, but that thing is WAY too big to have been overlooked for this long.

  • I'm almost positive it is damage. I've been sent "new VAMs" that had that look. The trough of metal around the outside indicates the place it was worked to raise up the part you focus on.

Sorry, but at least the melt value of damaged coins has gone up lately. image

  • At least it's "one of a kind". I'll tell my friend to give it to one of his kids.
