I have a old PCI slab morgan mS63 nice reverse cressent toner,....I swear this coin is a 64, and would rather have it in a more reputable holder anyway....would i be more apt to get a 64 if its out of the 3rd world holder?,....."would NGC never up a PCI"?

also in general, do you crackout your coins or send em holdered.....????

I always crack out my crossovers if they meet two conditions:

    1. I have no doubt they are problem-free and original.
    2. Losing one grade doesn't mean I'll lose my shirt.

By the way, getting one or two in each batch to go up a point from their previous holder grade has become a fairly common occurence for me.
    When in doubt, don't.

Everyone is different. Some crack and submit, some just submit. Do what you feel comfortable with. However, if you are going to crack a slab, regardless if it is PCI, NGC or PCGS, you are taking a gamble. In other words, it may come back a higher grade, or it may come back a lower grade. Even worse, it could get bodybagged for some reason that the other company did not find a problem.

That is the perception, although it is very hard

to verify that with facts. Most folks will break out the coin

and send it it. A warning, unless you are a pro or an expert

on a special series, if you break out a PCGS holder, you could get

back a coin graded lower. If you send in a PCGS holder coin, they will not

downgrade it and if they do they will reimbuse you the difference in the value

    of the coin.

this one would be a PCI breakout

Is it a green label PCI?
If so ten digit serial numbers PCI was a little tighter with grading and fourteen digits they were not quite as tight. Of course grade the coin not the holder.image

In general I do crack out coins, If it was a very expensive coin I would have to give it a good hard think. I have a GUT feeling that I get better grades with crack outs, no proof just a feeling. In the past I have had very good luck cracking out the old green PCI holders, good-luck.

  • I always look at it this way.... If you think the coin is a "grade" + .5 or better, IE, 64.7 then it'll grade 64 at PCGS on a cross... if it's borderline then if never crosses.... Something that I think is one point higher easy I'd crack. This is only KNOWING that I know how to grade my series....

I would always crack out a third-tier slab. Nobody would put any faith in the grade anyway, so what's the point of keeping it in the slab?

If it's a common date, crack it out.

older geen pci slabs often cross and even upgrade they were a decent grading company at that time.
I always deslab before I submit to a legitimate tpg, have had good results so far.

If it is a common date, I would leave it. The difference in price between 63 and 64 would be break even at best after postage and grading fees. The old holders sell easier, so by leaving it, you can have your cake and eat it too. If it is a much better date, and you want to sell, I certainly would think about it. Get opinions in person if that is possible, if not, post some photos to solicit opinions.

Not too long ago I bought a 1936 Texas PCI MS65 Commem. It looked to be at least a MS64. It was in the Gold PCI slab. I cracked it out and sent it to PCGS hoping for a MS64 tag. It came back upgraded to a MS66! I could not believe it. I originally got the coin for very cheap considering the PCI slab. I turned it into a very nice coin. I have a Iowa Commem at PCGS right now. It was a PCI MS65. I cracked it out also. It should go at least that. If you trust your own grading my advise is to crack it out and send it in instaed of trying to cross it.
  • I think leaving it in the 3rd party slab makes it easier to handle for a number of reasons:

    - You don't have to worry about damaging the coin further
    - Its easier to ship.

I'd rather have them deal with the slab.

Bust it out. Upgrades on old PCI by PCGS and NGC are not uncommon.
