Why was Pierzynski ejected today?

He makes a gutsy slide, gets punched in the mouth, and he then gets tossed?

Seems awfully unfair to me.

Probably just his reputation. Really, though, I dunno. I only caught a choppy replay on espn.com and haven't seen the situation dissected a million times, as I'm sure it has been today. But I will say how great it is to see the Cubs already in full meltdown mode. It's not even June!

He bowled over the Cubs catcher for a play at the plate, then smacked home plate to make sure he was safe, the Cubs catcher got in his grill, words were exchange, then blam, out of nowhere, punched him in the jaw.

  • I saw this play today, the Cubs catcher is going to get a hefty fine and suspension, well, hefty in the world of baseball, 3-5 games, and A.J. will get nothing!!! He did nothing wrong, cept blow the catcher over, same thing I would do!!!

From what I heard AJ was tossed since the ump heard what he told Barrett to set him off.

Umpires usually toss both participants in a fight, no matter how one-sided or whomever started it.

However in this instance, the cub catcher seems to be the only one doing any swinging, it appears A.J. who may, or may not, have been gulty of "trash-talking", not fighting, was unjustly thrown out of the game.

Barrett certainly deserves at LEAST a five game suspension, along with a nice fine.

AJ also after the colission initiated contacted with Barret on his "way back to the dugout," which happened to be in the opposite direction of where he was headed.

  • I always thought Pierzynski was a dirty player, but I don't think he should have gotten ejected. Barrett's actions were definitely the actions of a guy who knows his team is out of contention in May - but hey I guess it worked as they won today. If only the flubs let that goat watch the game... image

AJ was going away from his dugout because that was the direction that his helmet fell off. He was going back to pick it up.

Actually, I would argue that Barrett's actions were probably the same "heat of the moment" impulse that any of us would have if we had just been barrelled over by someone running at full tilt. I'm not saying what Barrett did was right - and yes that type of play is part of the game - but I can understand why his instinct to fight aggression with aggression. In such an intense situation, I think we would all have to battle to keep our temper under control.

I can't help but think that the reason he threw the punch was already mentioned - the Cubs are done without Derek Lee.

Throw in the fact the team they are playing are the defending world series champions, and that they are getting more and more press in chicago, and you have players who have big chips on their shoulders.

AJ makes a great play, scores a run, and slams home plate because he's amped. He was probably in a bit of a daze, which was why he was walking the wrong way, and the Cubs catcher just couldn't handle it, and sucker punched it.

I say sit the cubs catcher for 5 games, a nice hefty fine, and be done with it.

Have you ever watched a game? Do players really pick up their helmets when they fall off? Do they grab their bat on the "way to the dugout" too?

Also, it was hardly a "sucker punch. They were face to face and AJ could see it coming. I am not condoning the punch, but only righting some of the facts here.

The Cubs are fcuked with DLee, so its a good thing he'll be back in 2-3 weeks.

If you take Pujols, Carpenter and Mulder away from the Cardinals, where would they be?

  • Just some replies:

AJ also after the colission initiated contacted with Barret on his "way back to the dugout," which happened to be in the opposite direction of where he was headed.

Given AJ's reputation and MB's hot temper, AJ's action of walking back to "get his helmet" did not help the situation at all. As a catcher, AJ should know that MB must have been ticked after that play, but he added fuel to the fire. MB is still the idiot and deserves what suspension, fine he has coming his way.

He bowled over the Cubs catcher for a play at the plate, then smacked home plate to make sure he was safe, the Cubs catcher got in his grill, words were exchange, then blam, out of nowhere, punched him in the jaw.

I wouldn't say that he smacked home plate to make sure everyone saw that he was safe. Still, it is a moot point as MB did not see that. Aj did the right thing during the play and MB was an idiot and an embarrasment for true Cubs' fans.

I can't help but think that the reason he threw the punch was already mentioned - the Cubs are done without Derek Lee.

NO. The Cubs are done even with Derek Lee. It is that without him, we are a minor league team.

Throw in the fact the team they are playing are the defending world series champions, and that they are getting more and more press in chicago, and you have players who have big chips on their shoulders.

    Well said.

AJ makes a great play, scores a run, and slams home plate because he's amped. He was probably in a bit of a daze, which was why he was walking the wrong way, and the Cubs catcher just couldn't handle it, and sucker punched it.

I still insist that is not why he walked that way. It was intentional, but no excuse for MB's behavior.

If you take Pujols, Carpenter and Mulder away from the Cardinals, where would they be?

Probably working the phones to get in GREAT (not 2nd class) replacements. Even with those players out, they would be better than us. We need to stop with the excuses.
