I am a frequent buyer of this set and this game is getting more and more popular amongst thieves.

Yeah, that is funny.
He hasn't been doing the "Fresh meat!" thang lately. Maybe he didn't like my sig file?

Invasion of the body snatchers?
i am in search of the 1999-s silver proof set at a reasonable price.
No such animal exists! I thought I was ripped when I paid $64 each.
If you toggle over to the Buy, Sell & Trade Coins forum, you should find that TASSA of jaderarecoins has a 99 silver set up for sale@ $350.
<< <i>And I was hesitent to pay $90 back a few years ago for this set, since it seemed out of line..... Good purchase, now why did I not get 10 >>
Raven, I ask myself the same question. I was reluctant to buy my second set at $75. After I got the first one from the mint at what ever the release price was. I'm glad I did buy one, but I wish I had bought a dozen.
<< <i>I have two of them-in silver---i figure in a couple years i can sell and buy a lear jet >>
I also have two silver sets......I figure I might buy a nice new 4x4 pickuup......
Oh.......BTW.........................
How would one go about verifying if they have the silver or the clad coins? I notice both have the "s" mintmark.

I need the 99 and 2001 and I will be complete up to date.
I am still a beginner but I feel a strong urge to complete the set.
I first started looking at the 99 set when it was $330 I wish I would have bought then, but I kinda feel that as soon as I do they will be $200 or less. I will soon have to bite the Silver bullet and just get the damn thing.

<< <i>Doesn't the PCGS holders have tamper protection? Shouldn't you easily know if someone opened it? From watching ebay the set goes for $375-$450. The majority now are in the 400's. >>
Surprised no one has responded to this yet.......................We're not talking PCGS Graded coins here, just the US Mint Proof coins which can easily be opened with a thumbnail.

Coppertop, once you see a silver one, you can never mistake it for a clad. The white color is way different.
(Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)
<< <i>Has anyone actually seen a set where the silver was switched for clad, or is this just a myth? >>
I wouldn't doubt that it has happened, but I haven't seen it myself.

Lanlord,
I have seen plenty of the silver ones. What I haven't seen are the clad ones. Are people suggesting that these unscrupulous people are replacing the silver coins with proof set coins (which also have the "s" mint mark) or with coins clad by a third party.
I own both the proof sets and the silver sets. When I compare the 2006 proof set with the 2006 silver proof set, they are difficult to distinguish. I would be more afraid of someone putting the 1999 proof set coins in the 1999 silver prood set container.
But then again, I am no expert....
I still kick myself that I was offered one of these sets at a coin show in 2003 for $135! I had enough cash at the time and I just didn't jump at it!

How can you tell for sure? without opening it up yourself.

The modern proof sets are just so easy to open though. I just opened the 2006 silver set for the Kennedy and it hardly had to touch the edge with but knife tip and it was open. To make a fake 1999 with clad coins you wouldn't even have to use the original pieces of plastic for the holder as they are all the same size since 1999

My point exactly. I have 2 sets I bought when you could still get them for $200 + - . I can't see any marks around the edges, like I tend to make when opening a set. But I'm not trying not to mark the holders.
Do you think, we as collectors could get the mint to invest in a sonic welder? a tack type weld would be enough to show tampering. and avoid glue as that can interact with and ruin the coins.
What other idead can you think of to help prevent tampering,(counterfitting) of proof sets?
P.S. I look at 04 clad and sliver sets side by side, and can't tell them apart. I can't see any real difference looking at the coins in my album either.

It is quite easy to switch coins from set to set without damaging the original packging somewhat not accomplished in prior years. It is also quite difficult to distinguish at times the difference between the Silver and Clad..........JMO..............
edit......look at the edge......

I recieved 20 of these such sets from another dealer on eBay. He claimed he didn't know but he was selling individual 1999 silver quarters under the same ID. Thankfully I got my money back. A word of the wise use paypal when buying these sets on eBay!

And I also have two of these, purchased from the Mint that year at the issue price. 1999 was one of only three years in which I ordered any silver proof sets, and I have no idea why I was moved to do so in any of the three years. But I'm sure glad that I did!
I'll wait twice as long as you two guys to sell them, and I'll get BOTH a private jet and a new pickup truck.
We just sold one on the BST today.......

Not everyone has perfect eyesight. i imagine that newcomers or even unsuspecting oldtimers may not be able to tell at first glance sometimes. They may just buy a set- look at it one time and salt it away-then when they check it years later they find out that they were scammed.
