One of my friends is doing the sandberg sets too and I asked him why those cards were in there. Apparently, he didnt ask for them and PSA said they were acceptable for the basic set.

I can answer this. I was enlisted by PSA to help submit the sets. Off the advice of a friend in the hobby, he suggest I copy Tony Gwynn's basic set (since they started the same year). Up until the early 90's it was three cards every year. Topps, Donruss, Fleer which is what I thought a basic set should be. Once I submitted the set to the registry and it was posted online the basic was nothing close to what I sent in. I sent an e-mail to BJ and she basically stated the set that was put online was the one that followed the guidlines. I agree the 7-11 disks and K-B Toys cards or things of that nature should not be in the basic set.

  • I had the same issue with the Ken Griffey Sr. Set that I submitted. I also sent an email to BJ about the discs and such and was given the same anwser. Another issue I had was that the Dave Concepcion had cards in the Basic set that weren't in the Master Set. I emailed about that and it still hasn't been fixed. I thought that when a player set is submitted that PSA was going to send out some kind of excel spreadsheet for the requestor to put all the cards on. I understand that the PSA folks are busy and I don't know where they get the info for the sets but when the Griffey Sr. set hit the web page the 74 Topps which is his rookie was left off. In their defense it was added the same day I emailed.

Looking for 81-84 Topps Stickers in PSA 9 or better, 81 Topps Scratch offs, 83 Topps Fold outs in PSA 8 or better, 83 Fleer Stamps and 81/86 Fleer Star Stickers in PSA 9 or better.

Well they need to get it right. A basic set is supposed to be just that their BASE cards. image Bad enough chasing down a modern player set but when there is crap like this included it takes all the fun out of it.

If BJ thinks that this set makes sense he needs a new job. There are hand cut cards, playing cards, stickers, this is the most retarded thing I have ever seen on the set registry.

Just send her an e-mail and stop bitc hing. BJ is not a card collector - she is a programmer, and a damn helpful one at that. Honestly - it amazes me sometimes how many people are willing to step up on boards like this and complain - but yet don't do anything about it. Send her an e-mail politely stating your issue and which specific cards you think should be in the Master, but not the basic set. My goodness.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

or better yet, talk with the other Sandberg player collectors, reach agreement amongst yourselves, and then submit the revised spreadsheet to PSA.

Ok perhaps I am bitc hing a little image but is this not a CARD set registry?? I'm sorry but I deal with enough frustration around here with quality assurance, delays in submissions, etc. PSA is my grader of choice but there is only so much someone can take. I thought a post on the companies message board was doing something about it.

    Well put Mike^^^^^

    Jeff,
I believe I still have the spreadsheet I filled out and sent to PSA. We can communicate with the other 5 guys and see what they think. We can use this thread, IM or email. Seriously take a look at Gwynn's basic set, thats what I copied and thats what submitted.

They rely on the set collectors to agree to a set and then that's what becomes the basic set.

If you really feel that strongly about it, get together with the other set collectors and remove the extra cards. Until you do that, I am not sure why you are here complaining?

We had an issue with the Boggs basic set where someone wanted to include sportsflics cards and a majority voted no. I doubt you'll have much (if any) resistance to get the discs and what not removed.

Absolutely it is. What will happen is you guys get together through email, get a definitive list together, and submit it. Then they will send out the list to all the set registry particpants, get a vote, and if a majority says yes, then that becomes the new list.

    Just to add some history:

Originally player sets were just that: There was no such thing as Master and Basic sets. I helped put together one of the first player Registry sets, for Mike Schmidt, back in 2001. I think there were 94 cards at the time - and that represented all the different Schmidt cards that were ever graded by PSA.

The Registry has grown and evolved since then. There are Basic and Master sets - and there are hundreds of examples of most modern players for whom can be included in Basic and Master sets. This sort of information is really hard to sort through for collectors themselves. [e.g. I've always thought SportFlics were mainstream and should be in the basic sets]. Since the Registries are primarily for collectors [with a benefit of helping PSA], the onus is essentially upon them to try and follow the guidelines and come up with a conclusion as to which cards should be where. PSA does have some general guidelines - I would suggest at looking at popular player registries for advice. But, at the end of the day, there are not going to be a whole hell of a lot of people putting together Sandberg sets - and it is best for everyone if they try and work out the issues amongst themselves.

  • I have to agree with MikeSchmidt on most things in this post. I will however say that when it comes to Master sets that it can go overboard. For instance the Pete Rose Master has two complete decks of playing cards in it. To me it's a waste and I don't send any in but I will pick them up off Ebay if they are cheap.
I also have had nothing but good experiences dealing with Gayle, Corsetta and BJ. I just try and keep things in perspective as to they are only three people trying to keep up with all our reqests.

Whats spooky when putting this set together is I am finding more and more cards that are not in the master set. I am waiting for 8 cards to be added to the master set that I have in hand. I agree all three ladies are very nice through email or on the phone.

All issues, research annd time will be saved if they had "collector sets". Just add cards as you get them regardless of year, as long as it says the name of the player you are collecting in the database its in. The cards would be put in chronological order and then grade order. This really doesn't have to be this difficult? Put it this way , if you have 9 83 Donruss ,5 Fleer and 16 Topps Sandbergs you can list them all in your set and they would be sorted by highest grade to lowest for each company with Donruss being first then Fleer, OPC and Topps. No waiting , completion marks, awards or ratings, just fun collecting cards of your favorite player. Save the have you seen the collectors showcase yet responses.

    OMG!

I thought the basic set was limited to "cards that were available in packs, throughout the country"? Maybe I made that up, but it sounds fair. Regionals, hand cuts, discs. Unless someone had an "olber-forune" it is impossible to buy graded or even spend grading fees to grade worthless cards. But, from a business standpoint, if people care about 100%, some will spend it!

Indeed I agree that a 1985 Sandberg Panni sticker isnt worth the paper its printed on but thats what seperates the collectors. People that collect for the love of the hobby and the people who relate cards to dollar signs. Either way there is no right or wrong.
