What to do after you spent all your currently available coin funds ...

DMWJRDMWJR Posts: 6,008 ✭✭✭✭✭

Why, you take photos of you new coin, that's what!

Thanks go to LMS for the coin, and to mgoodm3 for the tips on photo skills.

There are a few scuffy clouds on the holder that show up on the obverse, but the coin is SWEET!

I drastically reduce my collection by getting rid of "junk" coins. If this does not work, then I cry like a little school girl. image

It's a Nikon D100. Several guys have offered their experience and advice freely, and I appreciate it. So, I want to do my part and return the favor to others. I had bought a 55mm Macro lens for the camera, but when I bought it, I really didn't have a clue what I needed. With a 55mm lens, you have to get so close to the coin that it interferes with you lighting, and also makes it difficult to focus the lense on the entire coin. My earlier pictures would be clear on some areas of the coin, and fuzzy on other parts. It was very frustrating, and I had no clue what I was doing wrong. Well, I had the wrong lense for what I was wanting to do. After a few emails with mgoodm3, I realized that I needed a lens that would allow me to focus from a greater distance. I had a 2x teleconverter on hand, so I thought I might try that. It gave me a 110mm lens which let me move away from the coin (the downside is I lost a couple of F stops). Nevertheless, my pictures got much better, like the one below. I will be purchasing a 155mm 2.8 lens in the near future, which I think is probably the optimum lens for coin photography.

Thanks for the comments on the pictures. For this picture, I also worked on photochopping for the background. It makes a heck of a difference in the pictures. It also makes me appreciate the time and devotion that some of our great board photographers put into their work. It is very tedious work, and I am amazed at how some of them do it over and over, producing incredible visual images of the coins we love.
