Worst PSA 8 I've seen - sadly, I bought it...

Happened onto the auction with about 10 seconds left - SMR $75, got it for $11.50 + s&h. Definitely overpaid. Haste makes waste - Looks like a 5 to me - has anybody seen many non-Wiwag's off by three grades?

A PSA NM-MT 8 is a super high-end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the card can exhibit the following: a very slight wax stain on reverse, slightest fraying at one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection, and/or slightly off-white borders. Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.

A PSA NM 7 is a card with just a slight surface wear visible upon close inspection. There may be slight fraying on some corners. Picture focus may be slightly out-of-register. A minor printing blemish is acceptable. Slight wax staining is acceptable on the back of the card only. Most of the original gloss is retained. Centering must be approximately 70/30 to 75/25 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.

A PSA EX-MT 6 card may have visible surface wear or a printing defect which does not detract from its overall appeal. A very light scratch may be detected only upon close inspection. Corners may have slightly graduated fraying. Picture focus may be slightly out-of-register. Card may show some loss of original gloss, may have minor wax stain on reverse, may exhibit very slight notching on edges and may also show some off-whiteness on borders. Centering must be 80/20 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.

Excellent On PSA EX-5 cards, very minor rounding of the corners is becoming evident. Surface wear or printing defects are more visible. There may be minor chipping on edges. Loss of original gloss will be more apparent. Focus of picture may be slightly out-of-register. Several light scratches may be visible upon close inspection, but do not detract from the appeal of the card. Card may show some off-whiteness of borders. Centering must be 85/15 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.

A PSA VG-EX 4 card's corners may be slightly rounded. Surface wear is noticeable but modest. The card may have light scuffing or light scratches. Some original gloss will be retained. Borders may be slightly off-white. A light crease may be visible. Centering must be 85/15 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.

I count 9 fisheyes on the back, plus the huge, pink stray ink on the front. A PSA 5 (pd) would not be out of the question - making it off by 5 grades. It's so bad it's good.

I would contact PSA and get your money back. They make money by taking the risk out of buying a card. This card show that PSAs grading ability can't be trusted. I can't imagine that they would even want this card out on the market. Cards like this give them a bad name. You would be doing them a favor by accepting money for the card to go back to PSA.

Any chance there is a NMMT 8 out there in an EX 5 holder? Maybe two of the same copy were sent in and grades reversed by accident?

On the reverse scan.... does the bottom edge of the holder look frosted??

The bottom edge (all edges) has not been tampered with - nice scratch free holder, no dig marks around the groove either.

Phreaky - is that 87/13 from the middle of the border or at the worst point?

Anyway, if you wanted to dump the card, just put it up on ebay, but without a picture. Just say it's a PSA 8, your scanner/camera is broken, blah blah blah...but put in tiny print, "no returns accepted on graded cards."

^^Look at the left edge on the front scan. No way thats an 8, hell I've seen cleaner 6's.

If I bid on this card after the seller pulled a move like that I would fall out of my chair laughing. This card is an instant classic, and for 13$ or so I'd be proud as punch to own it. You don't get comic relief from a card very often, and when you do it's a precious gift indeed.

When I saw the title of the thread, I thought it would likely be a case of someone not taking care of the card after it was graded. Yikes, with the print defects and the diamond cut, that's just a nasty looking card to be in a 8 holder.

Given the obvious condition of the card, I really don't think this card was deliberately overgraded. Like mentioned earlier, I think there was possibly two of these cards and the person who did the slabbing simply got the two mixed up and ensulated with the wrong flip.

Either way, this card definitely does not deserve the grade on the flip and PSA has to make some type of amends according to their policy.
