Home Metal Detecting

I need your help finding a bunch of buried coins

I just found out that my aunt inherited her parents home. They are also in the process of selling the home.No buyers yet though. I also was told that her father had buried a bunch of coins somewhere in the yard and no one has been able to locate them. From what I understand he dug them up once and removed them from coffee cans and put them into some sort of pvc piping. The aunt is going to let me search for them.I have a Whites Spectrum XLT metal detector which I am only a novice at. I have only used it a dozen times or so and only on the preset programs. Is there a systematic approach that should be taken or just start searching and hope for the best?

The house sits on about 3/4 of an acre, the house being about 1200 Sq.Ft, frame construction with raised wood floors. Located in Florida about 1 mile from the intercoastal waterway. Her father used to work for the State as a wildlife or forestry ranger, something like that. There is one very large oak tree on the property as well as a few other smaller oaks. My aunt and her siblings grew up in the house in the 50-60's. I would assume most of the coin are silver, although the family said that their father dug up some of the coins once and sold what they remebered to be Spanish gold to a local coin dealer for around 10K. So theres no telling what is still buried.

Where are most coins buried at? the back yard, near a tree or near the house? Is there a common trend of preferred hiding places? Also what about depth? I know it could be anywhere but what is most common?

How about the settings on the metal detector. How does pvc affect the detectors ability to pick up a signal? Should I create a customized setting based on the info I have?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....I can't wait to get started. I'll probably start with the most probable locations and section off the rest and hope I stumble upon something. Also interesting was that he replaced all the wood flooring in the house a long time ago too. I wonder if anything could be hiding there as well.

  • Your "Whites Spectrum XLT " should be able to find an object (size) like a beer can from 17" to 24".
PVC will not stop you from locating the coins

Take a coffee can and place it on the ground. Now use the XLT to see how it reads.

I would think two feet would be the deepest one would be buried.

Grid off part of the yard, and get to work. Then pick another part and do it.

Program--- "Coin" should do it. Remember, the target will be LARGER than that of a coin! ! !

    Good Luck

I would think if I were to bury my chest of gold it would be behind my house, out of sight of any passers by. I would also use a landmark of sorts so I knew where it was at any time without measuring from point A,B and C. I would begin close to the house, at the edge of a concrete patio for instance and work my way outward. If there were flower beds I might bury it at a corner of one, easy spot to dig at any time. Just look at the layout of the yard and try to analyze it, where would a nontrusting old fart want to bury his wealth?

  • Go to any and all the windows in the rear of the house. Look out of those windows. Any area that you can see from those windows will have to be searched closely. People buried coins so they could walk to a window and see the area without having to go outside. Let us know how it goes.
  • if the coins are in PVC, with no other iron or other metal in them. If you run your coil over them you should get a high(coin) reading. Start by doing a grid pattern diggin all good signals. If it were me everything above screw cap. If you don't find it then if you desire you can go to all metal mode and dig everything. That would be the only way to be certain. Even if you don't find the cache you should find some neat old stuff.

I thought about that myself....thats why I been real careful about giving up too much info...you guys are like a bunch of slueths. One slip of the tongue and the hoard would be gone before I knew it... image
  • Randy, I was looking at the "yard" today, I think you should start looking under the bird feeder next to the rose bush :-)

Next look over by the fruit tree.

    Hope this helps.

    Jerry,

I'll be doing a little digging this afternoon. I'll make sure I check those spots.

A family member told me they remember hearing that it was outside the family room window, near the house. Wish me luck!!

  • All metal Mode, work slowly, Im sure he placed it somewhere he could see it from his house, a window or something. Look for indentation, softer ground, something out of the ordinary, a worn trail....Lots of signs, good luck let us know.
    Love them busts!
I am Looking to Buy California Tokens too.
  • I would think a side of the house away from the utilities side where people come in to read the meters or any other 'blind' side.

If there is a fence, perhaps near the base of the posts.

Some stuff may have been more dear and hidden closer that outdoors. I would make a pass on the inside of the house. Perhaps loot is hiding in some wall cavities as well.

My mom told me a story about a man that lived near her when she was growing up.
She had heard that he buried his money in his back yard. One evening she saw him
going around the house with a jar in his hand. She followed at a discretionary
distance and saw that he took it into the woods. I suppose the man and/or his
family wanted to throw people off track if they were looking for the money.

Another story that my Uncle told me was that a friend used to go to the dump
to look for goodies. (one man's trash is another's treasure) Someone had torn down
the basement walls of a house and dumped the partial walls and block there.
He found a mason jar full of Morgan dollars in one of the broken blocks. (Sweet!)

This happened recently: A company had been hired to renovate an old house in
town. When they were working on the roof via the attic, one of the workers found
about $50K of old large denomination bills. He tried to use them to buy groceries
and all were confiscated. (Arrrrgghhh!!! Why do these things never happen to me?)

Anyway, this should give you some good ideas of hiding places indoors or out.
