2006 Britannia Silhouette Collection

I remember seeing this set in Coin World a few weeks ago and that article had them slated for release in August but the set is up for sale on the Royal Mint website now. Not cheap but limited to 3000 sets. I got one as I have all the Britannias in regular issue and proof.

Could you imagine the clamour (and the dead website) if there were a gold plated silver eagle set with a limit of 3000!

A very interesting note on the webpage

Please note that Mr Philip Nathan, the creator of the Britannia designs in the Golden Silhouette Collection, has not consented to the use of the designs on part-gilded silver coins.

I passed on this set and probably will stop collecting Britannias because of it.

  • Looks like the price of this set has dropped to more reasonable levels:

    Recent eBay auction

    ($475 >> $266)

Might have bid if the auction had a return policy of some sort...

Those are pretty cool. Might be interesting to pick up a set and consider your select gold electroplate (SGE) Britannia set complete.

Of course, if someone else takes some normal Britannias and adds select gold electroplate, would you be able to tell the difference?

4 of the 5 coin designs were not issued in 2006, outside of this set. Also, I vaguely recall that the set has a special matte finish of some kind, but I haven't seen it in-person, so I can't comment on whether the finish alone could be used for authentication.

For now I've decided to stop collecting silver Britannias issued after 2006. The BRM switched designers in 2007, and seems to raise the price each year, so I'll just limit my set to Britannias designed by Philip Nathan.

Yes, I was initially attracted by the date combos in this set but the price absolutely drove me off. The ebay price quoted a lot more reasonable.

I, too, prefer Philip Nathan's Britannia designs. I was not impressed with Christopher Le Brun's 2007 Britannia design with Britannia portrayed without her helmet. image

Yes, how about the sullen lion who looks as though he has just be reprimanded? If you look at a Krause from about 3-4 years ago, there is a picture of a 1926 Pattern Crown with the Britannia reclining done by Humphrey Paget I believe that is FAR superior and might be considered for a subsequent Britannia.

I agree with you on the lion. Any link to a picture of the pattern crown?

Uhh, I am technically challenged but the pic is in the pattern section so if anyone can help that would be great!
