E-bay Jerk overcharging me for S/H

I just bid on and won six auctions for my Registry set of 75 Topps Psa 8 Commons. I wasnt expecting to win the cards so cheap. I won all six cards for $6.26 ! but I should have known that winning them would have come with a price. The guy sends me the regular E-bay invoice with my purchase price($6.26) and the S/H price of $12 dollars ! So i send him a nice E-mail asking for the combined shipping total, He replies that he just sent me the total, including shipping, which is $12 dollars. Now so far I havent responded or paid him yet, Should I make a big deal out of this just for $18 bucks ?? Or should I at least send him an e-mail back letting him know that he is screwing me on shipping? I just checked with the usps website and to ship from his address to me the cards would have to weigh over a pound a piece, it SHOULD cost somewhere between 4 to 5 bucks to ship and that is priority Mail with delivery confirmation. This really pi**ess me off !

Pay it and tell him due to his failure to combine shipping for multiple auctions, you will not be bidding on any of his future auctions and will encourage other collectors to also avoid him.

Then, give us his ebay ID.

That really sucks... but even at $18, that's only $3 a card. It's the principle of the thing, and I agree... this guy must be upset and is doing what he can to get more out of his cards. I'd just pay the rediculous S/H, and wait to leave feedback. I would leave neutral feedback at best!

Bottom line, are you happy with six PSA 8s for $3 apiece? Sounds like a decent deal to me, and by your own admission you weren't expecting such a bargain. Yes, I agree that $12 to ship six holdered cards is excessive, but chalk it up to a bad experience & move on.

Did his auctions not have a clearly defined combined shipping policy? Most sellers will list in the descriptions a standard policy like "shipping is $3.50 for first card, and $1.50 for each each additional card". As I am the king of multiple purchases from eBay sellers, I have always learned to ask before I bid--"what is your policy concerning combined shipping?", if it is not clearly explained in the description.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
  • that sucks. Usually if the seller doesn't have anything stating they will combine shipping costs, I will email them before the auctions end to see if they will combine shipping costs for me. I don't think I have had any seller tell me they wouldn't. Yeh I hate feeling stiffed by ebay sellers.

If you are bidding on someone's wares you are unfamiliar with, ALWAYS read all of the print and ALWAYS ask any questions PRIOR to bidding.

He's got you by the shorthairs.

Why bother emailing him and telling him he's screwing you on shipping? He knows it.

I would suggest posting his username here so others can be forewarned.

Or you could tell him you intend on paying him separately for each card and that you have six different addresses that they need mailed to......(relatives in your town, friends, etc...)

I am going to pay, and still the final cost of $18.26 isnt a bad price for what I got, (I usually get psa 8's for around 3-4 dollars a piece anyway) The auctions all had under 20 minutes to go when I bid on all of them so I didnt think I would get a response to any e-mail I sent that fast. His auctions stated shipping was $2.50 for the item I was bidding on. You would think if the guy was fair enough to just charge $2.50 for shipping a single item he wouldnt try to jerk you around on combining the shipping. It still gets my gizzard that he is going to charge me $12 bucks for something that should be $4.

    that is sad but true.

the seller is obviously extremely desperate for income and willing to do whatever to justify his means, even sadder commentary, but whatever...

at least you got the cards for $3/pop

Seller's auctions stated that S&H was $2.50. He didn't state that he would combine shipping. In reality, he gave you $0.50 off per card.

Auctions went for so little because the seller didn't list the cards as "1975 Topps". He listed them as "75 Topps". None of my searches would have found them. Congrats on getting a good deal. I'd pay the $12 shipping and still consider myself fortunate.

In Reality he overcharged about $8.00 for shipping. Last time I checked the Post Office didnt charge you for how many you have in the package but how much the package weighs. Which in this case was less than 1 pound.

You seem confused about shipping charges. It is called shipping and handling. Even if he could send the cards Priority Mail at the cheapest rate ($4.05), he can still charge you reasonable handling charges. Whether almost $8.00 is reasonable? probably not.

But he did give you a discount (however small), whne he had promised no such thing.

I wasn't saying what shipping should have cost. I was saying what he could have charged. Definitely not making an excuse for the seller. I looked him up so I could make sure I never bid on anything he had for sale.

If you pay for each item separately then paypal charges him the minimum service fee for EACH item. It'll cost him a few extra bucks too. Let it go after that.

You need to quit doing searches and go back to looking at each baseball card auction so you do not miss anything

Sorry TenBanker. I understand your frustration, but the seller was straight foward. He stated his shipping charge and you agreed to those charges when you bid. To complain after the fact that he "ripped" you off is off base. What the Post Office charges means nothing. You didn't buy the item from the Post Office, you bought from the seller on Ebay.

The "overcharged for shipping" threads come up at least once a week (if not once a day).
If everyone follows these rules there would be no problem.
    #1 READ the entire auction
#2 Understand what the sellers shipping charges are and what they entail
#4 Understand what payment methods the seller accepts. If you want to pay in a different manner, contact the seller before bidding.
#5 If you are not sure about any charges or the condition of item, email the seller before bidding.
#6 When you place a bid, you are accepting the sellers terms.
    #7 Bid on item accordingly

Tell him that since you have to pay shipping for each item individually....you want each item shipped individually.

  • I personally don't find the charges excessive. There was no shipping policy explicitly stated. The seller probably has at least $30 + PSA ridiculous shipping charges in the cards -- and this just takes into account grading fees. PSA would charge you at least $11.50-13.20 s/h for 6 graded cards, depending on the declared value.

I think you got a hell of a deal.
  • MorrellManMorrellMan Posts: 3,241 ✭✭✭
What Duner said - absolutely. If you're paying 6 shipping and handling charges, you should expect six separate packages. You're paying for the extra protection that separate packaging affords, so it's not like you are mindlessly trying to stick it to him.

I would say something like "Thanks for not pandering to my cheapness - I appreciate your treating each card as separate entities, so that each card will be packaged and sent individually to insure there is no damage. I also appreciate your giving me the 50 cent discount on each, since you only need to make one trip to the post office."

So you think the seller should be required to eat the priority mail charge (which is $4.05 at least), packing materials, the bubble/photo mailer, PayPal fees, and the delivery confirmation charge?

PLEASE BID WITH CONFIDENCE, THAT YOU WILL BE TREATED WITH VERY GOOD SERVICE.

    Prority Mail = $4.05
    Packing Materials =$1.50
    Pay Pal Fees = $ .55
    Delivery Confirmation = $ .50

Receiving cards in a bubble mailer with usps charge of $1.49 = Priceless

No matter what type of deal I think I might get at an auction or how badly I need the item I do not bid unless I can get a shipping quote from the seller first.I learnt this the hard way as i once paid $20 for shipping for just a few slabbed cards.

So, exactly what was this schmuck's eBay user id? When I sell cards on eBay, if someone is gracious enough to bid on and buy more than one of my auctions, extra items are shipped free of charge.

I'd insert a link to my auctions, but my computer skills are limited. ebay user ID - gordsox
