Wax Rip Question

I just got a wax box of 1984 Topps BB--however, as almost all I collect is graded, I don't have spare penny sleeves/card savers/toploaders hanging around. Should I buy some of these, and wait for a while before I rip it, or should I just say the hell with it, and store it in a cardboard box?

I'd say hold off until you have some card savers or sleeves. When I'm eyeing cards as I'm going through a pack break, I like to put any cards that look like they have potential immediatly into sleeves or card savers for later inspection. With some issues, like early 80s Topps, the more you thumb through the raw cards, the more the edges will chip and flake.

In that case, I suppose I will open the top four packs, as they have the most damage of any (a bit of handling, otherwise everything is fine), and save the rest for when I get in an order of sleeves and card savers.

    Thanks!

Stolen from ebay, to point out the irony of the "Don't Do Drugs" message...

The gum is disgusting---disintegrated in my mouth once "chewed" (broken up, really). Oh well...

2001 topps heritage gum, still good 5 years later..will it be good in 20 years?

What is the best way to avoid damaging cards while putting them in penny sleeves?

    Thanks

I have heard some people here cut about a half inch at the side, to slide it in without chipping the borders.

I say just don't use a penny sleeve.
if you decide to though, you can just cut the corner off and use that as your lead spot to get the card in the sleeve.

I use the technique of slicing the side of the penny sleeve open so I can slide the card into it. It's those dang Card Saver protectors I don't get along with. Is there a technique to getting cards inserted all the way into them without causing damage?? I try to squeeze the silly things open, but it's a three-handed job at least...

    Thanks,

Well, I was able to dig up some 9 pocket pages, and was able to open 15 packs using them--69 cards have decent centering and no obvious flaws, out of 225.

    scans, Scans, SCANS!!

I've got a couple raw sets of these '84Ts and an unopened wax box. It's a fun set! If you decide to try to complete a raw set, let me know. I've probably quite quite a few doubles boxed up somewhere.

    Good luck on your rip...

dgf once wrote about inserting the cards backwards. I have been doing this into the cs1's and I think it works great. I hold the cs1 with my thumb on one edge and middle, ring and pinkie on the other egde. I have the opening the opening at the top and facing me. I then use my index finger on the same hand to open the top and I slide my index finger all the way to the edge of the opening on the same edge as my 3 fingers. With my other hand I take th card and with the back facing me(so when it goes in it will fac out the back of the CS1 and If my index and 3 fingers are on the left side, I start with the bottom right corner into the opening by my index finger. I then slide the the right lower corner to the right of the cs1 andmove it almost to the right edge. That way, I can fit the left corner in next to my index finger. Then I keep holding it the same way and I guide it down with my right hand while keeping my left index figer in the openeing. This may be confusing, but I really have gotten it down so hopefully it will help some of you out there.

Wow, thanks for the lesson! I'm going to copy this and make a step-by-step procedure to practice from. I'll get it down eventually...
