Your Favorite Team

BoopottsBoopotts Posts: 6,784 ✭✭
Here's a discussion that I think could be kind of interesting. What is your favorite team, college or pro, that a) never won a championship, and b) you don't usually root for? I'm thinking of a particular year, not just a school/ franchise (i.e., not the Montreal Canadiens, but rather 1977 Montreal Canadiens, or whatever). Mine would be hands down the 93 Phillies, followed probably by the 1991 Braves.

    1990 Red Wings & 2002 Raiders
  • The 1990 Buffalo Bills. They deserved to win at least one Super Bowl and dammit, Norwood gave it to the un-deserving Giants. image
  • This might be boring but the 2005 Astros - I wanted to see Biggio get that World Series ring so bad. But I'm not an Astros fan.
  • 2002 Florida football.

We were undefeated with Earnest Graham, our starting RB. We were 0-2 without him when he was injured.

  • Oh, and 2000 basketball. I desparately wanted them to win on their first trip to the NC game.

This year helps to forget that one though.

I like the topic. For me, even though I found it hard to root against Jordan, I was really hoping to see the Utah Jazz win (I think the year was 1998, not 100% sure), mainly because the game has rarely seen a classier duo than Stockton and Malone.

I forgot about the Jazz. My heart went out to Malone after he lost, especially when they asked him if we was going to come back and try it again. I remember he got kind of choked up and said 'Well, I'm not a quitter'. One of the more poignant post game interviews I can recall.

BTW, nobody with the name 'Gator' in their handle is allowed to mention the Florida Gators. I'm looking to see teams that you don't usually root for! image

I'm going to say the 2005 Astros as well. Being a Yankee fan, I was rooting for Pettite and Clemens.

Oh yeah, the Giants did deserve to beat the Bills.

85 Patriots, I really wanted Grogan to get a championship.

A shame Marino didn't get a Super Bowl ring.

Wow, if that would have happened, the 85 Bears would have been #1 on my list. Walter Payton deserved the ring more than anybody.

I would have loved to see George Mason win it all this year.

I also agree with the 84 Dolphins. Marino not getting a ring is a travesty.

I would also have to say every team that plays against the Yankees each year in the World Series. I always root for them since they are always the underdog against the giant Steinbrenner machine and the big media outlets.

    the '97 Indians.

although I am first and foremost a Reds fan, that blown world series still hurts.

The '97 Indians. I couldn't agree more with Goose. The '95 team was pretty solid too.

Did you end up finding a ticket for the game tomorrow? I'd be happy to have a beer with you if you'll be around.

    1984 Detroit Tigers.

Was in my first year in college watching the games in the dorm. Great memories.

  • As much as I hate the team now for what the owner has done to one of the most majestic of original 6 teams, I have to say that I wish the 1992 Blackhawks had won a Stanley Cup. They hadn't won one in a while and have been pretty bad since.

Also, how can I forget the 1984 Cubs and 2003 Cubs?

    1970s Minnesota Vikings
    1970s Houston Oilers
    1994 Montreal Expos
Sac Kings (the year they took the Lakers to 7 games and blew it)
    1989 Seton Hall Pirates

Dude-- The whole idea is to name teams you DON'T usually root for. That includes any team that is represented by your avatar.

Yeah, I don't get it. That's what I thought would be fun about it; now and then you find yourself pulling for a team that you never used to give the time of day to, and you don't really know why. There's just something about them that appeals to you.

Obviously I could sit here all day and name different Pistons/Red Wings/ Tigers teams that I liked, but there's no fun in that since I pull for these teams all the time anyway.

If there was a game the Giants didn't deserve to win, it was against the 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

Yup, Yup, I saw many posters went against it, so i did as well.

    So, here I go:

    1. As previously stated, the 1992 Blackhawks. I don't even care for them anymore
    2. 1997 Cleveland Indians
    3. 2002 SF Giants
    4. 1985 Dolphins
    5. 1991 Bills
