Did you know this was a pattern? Guess the grade, if you like...

.......but don't peak at the "properties" until you are done grading!

Interesting in that this is considered a pattern akin to the 1856 flying eagle. You hear people refer to the later as a pattern all the time but it's unusual to hear the same about this coin.

I'll post this and the 1907 No Motto later in the week, side by side, so you can more easily see the difference.

I don't know if it PR or MS.

    MS-64-

I was just looking at a few regular issues on teletrade- 62-63 and low for grade.

I would love to find a relaible place to pick one up raw.

  • I say 65. That hit on the reverse keeps it a 65. Nice luster. Nice gold.

I don't see any problem with the pattern designation for the Wire edge Indian Eagle. The Rolled edge is another story. With 31,500 originally minted I seriously doubt if it was intended to be a pattern. Great coin and one of my alltime favorite designs.image

MS64, maybe 65, but I'll stick with 64. Great looking coin. This is for PCGS, if graded at NGC MS 65 maybe 66.

Darn it, I was going to post essentially the same statement:-) What was the mintage for the Wire Edge, 500? I think with the Rolled Edge it is pretty convenient to call it a pattern since it is so expensive due to only 50 or so surviving. Good thing more of the Wire Edge survived so at least a few more folks have a chance at owning one.

  • As a learning excersize I'll take a stab at MS62 due to whatever is going on with the reverse rim at 9 o'clock and the cabinet rub over the upper wing: does luster matter in these patterns? does what looks like handling darkening in the fields? Is this a very high-grade circulated coin that legitimately makes it into MS status? (OOPS!! sorry, should have said "achieves" MS status.)

I am so ignorant about these beautiful old coins.... Rob

    MDN:

I'm no expert on gold 410's so hope Boiler or someone else will jump in.

The look is different in part because it's a different design and in part from the myriad coarse die polish lines running all over the fields and devices. So, while it has very nice luster, it doesn't have the flash of the usual Indian MS $10. The edge is difficult to appreciate fully but the wire rim is evident even in the holder.

The design difference are readily apparent when viewed side-by-side. More on that later in the week.
