Nasty Identity Theft Attempt on E-Bay....
EEE
Posts: 41
I have received literally thousands of identity theft attempts on my E-Bay account and this one almost got me...
A buyer sent a question about an item that I have up for sale:
The format matches E-Bay's exactly...
The item is one that I currently do have up for sale...
When I clicked on the "Respond Now" link, I was redirected
to a page that looks exactly like the typical E-Bay "Sign-In" page...
I typed in my user ID with an incorrect password...(A tactic I use often to test for Phishing)
At this point I was redirected to the "Respond to Member" form...
If I had typed in my actual passwrod, I believe my account would have been "hi-jacked"
Curious to see if this has happened to any of you lately....

PS...Here is the e-mail I received: (The format did not pate correctly...It actually matches E-Bay's format exactly)

<< <i>i'll pay extra just to be sure we will got a good deal >>
That makes absolutely no sense at all.
Thanks for the heads up.
But I do get many legitimate questions every day and it is not unusual to
be redirected to a legitimate sign-in page...
People who respond to ebay "emails" from their own email accounts are just ASKING to be ripped off. I realize a lot of people do it but still. It is your own fault if you become a victim through that method.
Hopefully everyone on here realizes that?
Don't answer ebay emails from YOUR OWN email accounts. Use the accounts Ebay gives you on their own server. This is supposed to protect you.
Until..
I wonder when the scammers are going to figure out how to trick the Account Guard button into turning green on the bogus sites?

<< <i>I never use email links..... never... always log in to your account to pay or answer questions.... >>
Exactly. I don't understand why people find this so hard to understand.
How do I go about turning on my PM and what does that mean ??

Hitting REPLY in Outlook will also work. Just don't click links
<< <i>You know, that's really scary, because I've answered so many emails that way. I'll never do that again. Instead, I'll log into ebay independantly and answer the messages that way. Also, I'm using an ebay toolbar now that turns green when you're on an authentic ebay site. Has anyone here had experience with that? I don't know how much trust to put into it but have it nonetheless. I think I'll go change my password after reading this. >>
if it makes you feel better, I just changed my password too
typically ill respond via regular email, but I think ive used that button in the past, though never to a screwy email.

I got an email from ebay today, someone saw a post I did on here about cleaning carbon off of proof lincolns. I hit respond and logged into ebay, and answerd his question not even thinking it could be a bum deal about to happen
so I went and looked on ebay just now, and thank god his message was there also, otherwise I couldve been a victim
