Holy Crap, Jefferson Variety collectors look here!!! Got Grades

I got a BU roll of 1949 D Jeffersons, decided to look through the roll, you are not going to beleive me, I found 16, yes 16 Very very BU 1949 D/S nickels. I swear these are all different coins. I have a ton of pics and won't post but a few. Now anyone have the pop reports on this coin??

    WOW! What a great find!!! If you can get any of them to go MS66 (that's tough to do!), they'll be worth $1000+ each.

    16 coins from the same die pair is about the most you'll get from a roll
    of this era and then being early die state is about the best possible luck.

    This is the second roll in the last year that something like this has happen. I think that guy found 13 49-D/S from that single roll. I mentioned it in an earlier thread here somewhere. Congrats to you!

    judging from the graded pops at PCGS it isn't unusual to find this variety in gem grades, it's just unusual to find the variety...................period!! the number of graded coins might seem high to someone who doesn't collect coins from this era until you start to consider that most Mint State coins will be authenticated when found(NGC lists 34 MS examples). my MS63 example is a nice looking coin and tends to the low end of the spectrum, i assume your potential MS66's and the FS'ers must be strong lustered bombs!! image

    Jeff & All,

    Jeff, received your coins safe and sound.

    I have attached a couple of photos of your 1949-D/S 5c OMM-1/FS-032.

    The top photo is at lower magnification which provides a more overall view. Even in this lower magnification, the "S" shows up quite prominent.

    The bottom photo is obviously at higher magnification. Here we can see the "S" remnants very bold and distinct. The upper "S" curvature remnants along with the upper serif are easily visible. The "S" top left curvature is very bold. What's so exceptionally nice about this specimen is one can see the very distinct and raised segments of the "S" middle curving diagonal bar remnants within the loop of the "D" mint mark. This is one of the nicest earlier die states for this popular OMM variety I have ever examined. If any of you have the CPG Guide, compare the photo in the CPG Guide on page 313 with the photos presented here of Jeff's coin.

    I took additional photos to include numerous die markers that will help collectors identify this variety and more importantly -- this particular earlier die state. I am currently working up the article for Numismatic News and will submit shortly to senior editor Dave Harper. I also will be having lunch with Dave at the upcoming ANA National Money Show in Atlanta this next weekend where I will be submitting your coins to the PCGS table for grading and encapsulation.

    That is one of the nicest scores I have ever heard. I have been trying to make a score like that for a long time. May I ask what you paid for the roll?

    I bought a roll of 1896 Morgans and every one was a VAM 4, Top 100. Not as nice a score as this one though, this is like hitting a 17 round golf score of 110 then getting a 2 on the last hole par 5. Very cool. You spend years looking at ordinary coins then something like this happens; it's why a lot of us keep the roll sellers in business.
