Does this Mercury Dime Look MS-68 to you?

Auction

To me, the obverse looks like a dime as painted by Monet....
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

  • I think it's got a decent shot at a 65FB designation, but Liberty would need a shave before I'd be able to tell! image

I bought a MS68 Roosie in a 2x2 on Ebay last week. The guy sold it for 99 cents. Actually the coin was real nice but not a 68. More like a high end 66 in my opinion.

If that Merc was 68 the seller would have it off to PCGS or somewhere before you could say "WOW". It could be nice but a 68 is all about luster and you sure cannot see much in the photo. The coin could very well be a 66 but my bet is 65.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • The same person is also selling this as "GEM67 FULL BANDS!!!". Leaving aside the Bearded Lady, the reverse definitely does not show full bands.

I don't think you can make an accurate judgment of the coin's graded based on the photographs provide.

Look at the slabs he sells. His grading matches that TPG......image

Actually I liked the look of some of the Mercs. They would be worth while watching to see if the price stays within reason when 3 points are knocked off.

At the MS-68 grade level, it it critical to view the coin in your own hand in your own lighting scheme.

My icon coin is a 66FB and I assure you it's nicer than the coin pictured in the auction.

    Ms68- no.

I have seen, in person, a few MS68 Mercs in both NGC and PCGS slabs. All had marvelous toning, brilliant lustre and no marks. In short, they were "wonder coins".
