Would coin collecting be as fun as it is if coin grading was not subjective...........

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,234 ✭✭✭✭✭
...........and instead was objective (like math, 1 + 1 = 2).

I think a lot of the fun would be taken out of the hobby if this subjectivity were removed. Doing so would eliminate (or at least reduce) the part that emotion plays in the hobby.

However, even if subjectivity in grading was eliminated and replaced with an objective system, I can still envision the same reality ("when I sell a coin it is PQ for the grade and when I buy the same coin it is low end for the grade").

Thoughts please.

It would be more fun for me if grading could be scientific and the guesswork was removed.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I agree. And most of the subjectivity can be removed even though beauty will always be in the eye of the beholder.

To answer your question, no. Consider how fun one's stocks and bonds are.

That's the way I feel because my time could be better spent studying more about coins in general
instead of wasting a lot of time trying to decide if the certified coin is near the low end or the high
end of the assigned grade, or if it is even that grade on the holder. Also I wish there was a crystal
ball at each dealer's table and it determined the exact price you should pay and what a dealer
should pay for your coin. All you do is ask the ball the question. In other words, simplified for you
just like the stock market works. That's why I like the stock market so much, unlike coins and real
estate there is no question about pricing, it's cut and dry.

It would take away SOME of the fun, but I like what CharlieB brought up. I'd like to spend more time learning about the history and the coins themselves than talking myself into or out of a potential good purchase.

It would not change me in the least. I collect what I like. Take my elongated set. I certainly don't think I can get it graded. It is challenging. It is unique, they are rare. Its fun.

I personally feel like it would be much more fun if grading disappeared from the scene totally...subjective or otherwise.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

It would take away some "fun" and some opportunity, but it would also take away some uncertainty. It would be different, but whether the experience would be better or worse on net, I can't say.

I think it would take away some of the stress that one can encounter in numismatics....
