There is an interesting story in today's Wall Street Journal about 32 women petitioning the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claiming that the Denver mint is a hostile workplace. The article has several tales by women who claimed they were harrassed, including one women who said she was propositioned when she returned from her bereavement leave for the death of her husband. (And, to head off the inevitable comments, "No, I do not know if she is hot." ) Another woman found, in an attic, "countless stacks of pornographic magazines" and chair with a deskarm. I leave it to your imagination to guess what went on there. Finally, yet another woman said that a male worker offered to pay her for sex and showed her his checkbook, apparently so that she could see his check was good. There were more tales along these lines. The gist of the article was to the effect that the mint is contesting these charges but there are a very large number.
There were a couple of interesting statistics about the Denver mint embedded in the article: It currently employs 414 people, including 93 women. Workers who run the coin-counting machines and presses earn about $31,000 to $43,000 per year.
