A little help with DCAM

Can anyone please provide me with a little info as to what exactly CAM/DCAM means. When I submit a coin that I feel is DCAM do I list this on the submission form or is it entirely up to the TPG to make this decision? I ask because I have a nice 1964 Proof Kennedy w/ accented hair that I would like to submit. I cannot tell if it is CAM or DCAM or niether. Please help.

Post a pic and Russ will help you out.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • When you submit a proof to PCGS, always use the number without a designation.

CAM/DCAM refers to the amount of contrast between the frost on the devices/letters and the fields. If the fields don't have the deep mirror clarity for several reflections, a designation isn't likely. If the frost has more than hairline breaks CAM/DCAM is difficult. Specific series and years have specific weak points. I'm not sure about Kennedy or I could offer specifics. Maybe Russ will chime in.

Look at the frost of the devices (of both sides), if it is solid white (no gray or black thorought even when tilted) with no breaks and the mirrors are jet deep black with no luster breaks then you have a shot (I say shot only the way PCGS is grading) at PCGS for Dcam. If it has the same whiteness with just a little dimness to the white, slightly grayish or black, again with no breaks either in the frost or mirrors, then you have a shot at cameo at PCGS.

Russ's pic do a very good job of showing this.

I dont think my 1964 Accented Hair has a chance at either. Should I grade it anyway or put it in my Dansco?

Ah now I understand the difference. Always been wondering exactly what the difference was. Deciding if the coin was a cameo or not was easy, CAM vs DCAM vs UCAM wasn't.

Put it in your Dansco -- it may tone nice rainbow colors after a few years.

Put it in the dansco! Use the grading fee money towards getting a new coin..... image
