need a little advice

I hope that I have the right forum for this question , if not let me know. I just signed yp a few minutes ago . The advice that I need is about selling a 1918/17 S.L. quarter in ef to au. I foound this quarter in 1963 when I was actively collecting. Guess I haven't needed the money until now. Getting ready to retire this year and am disposing of all the"stuff". The quarter was graded by a prominent dealer in St. Paul, mn at that time and is the only reason that I use it noe. I do know that I will have to have it graded by an agency--who? I would like an idea of who, how(auction or ?), when (market seems to be fairly strong now), I would rather not deal with e bay. e- mail me if you want. Just need some good solid advise. I greatly appreciate your help. This not meant to be an offer to sell anything, just a question---Thanks

    Welcome aboard.

Thats a better date coin and i would highly recommend having it graded by PCGS to maximize the value

First you need to have it professionally graded. If you only have one coin then ANACS is probably the way to go LINK. Then I would look into one of the bigger auction houses, Heritage for example LINK.

If you want maximum value (and who doesn't?), get it evaluated by PCGS. Once you have that done, determine which auction house will bring you the best return. Heritage often is a good choice for such items.

    I agree.
  • If its truly an 18/17 S you could be looking at 8-10 grand, get it in a PCGS holder and send it to one of the better auction houses

If you want to be treated right by an auction house, contact ANR.

HiimageI agree with the recommendations for you to get it slabbed by PCGS. I submit lots of varieties, and whereas PCGS will not label a lesser known variety except through the mint error category, the coin you have does have it's own PCGS number, 5726, and will get labeled correctly as 8/7, and if you ask, probably with the FS number if you want. I believe it will sell for more, possibly much more, than the same grade in another company's slab. It may sell for more even if PCGS gives it a lower grade than another company, so credible is the PCGS brand. Good luck!

Welcome as well.....maybe find a trusted dealer in the area you live to assist in getting it to PCGS (get it in writing that they are sending for you, etc).

Russ......I can't believe you would type that all the time.....do you have a bot do it for you when there is a newbie post? image

Sounds like welcome is to premature. If you are indeed getting rid of ALL the stuff, you will no longer be a coin collector and probably will not be coming back here after it's all gone. There is a buy/sell forum here and maybe you should try that. What else is the ALL?
